That is nicely done. It's what I'm building but with "swipe" RFID. The longer range RFID antennae I've found so far look a bit clumsy. Plus with swipe - the bike wont switch on when I leave my Jacket or gloves on the seat at home.
What I do like about that is it uses multiple relays - which I am doing also. The disadvantage on new R3's is the **** Sumitomo connectors for the ignition switch. And I am having trouble finding them. I wont be adding an alarm.
Yes, originally I was looking to only do the keyless ignition RFID swipe version, but the range is very limited for swipe type readers – you have to get within a couple of inches of the sensor for it to activate - which makes positioning the sensor on the bike difficult so it remains hidden and is easily accessible.
Using the Sombre K9 you get the longer range and can have it activate from a key fob automatically when you are close enough to the bike – Ken modified the receiver by removing the antenna completely so it has an effective range of 3-5 feet which is perfect. (With the antenna, it is about 15-20 feet which is too far).
You don’t need to use the alarm features, in fact I think most uses will not (annoying peizo alarm horns going off all the time by accident) its main use is to give hands free RFID operation without the need to swipe anything - just don’t connect the alarm horn and don’t add any shock sensors or such like,
but you do get the hotwire protection (someone tries to hotwire the bike it will disable the ignition) and there is also the anti hijack feature, if its disarmed and someone else rides off on the bike without the RFID key fob, it will automatically kill it 30-45 seconds later. It also flashes the indicators when armed and disarmed and pulses the OEM alarm LED in the Rocket RPM gauge when armed.. which is nice.
I hear you on the Sumutro connectors, it’s practically impossible to source the 8 way connectors needed, what Ken recommends is to use the 10 way connectors (which you can get from eager beaver) and simply remove the crimp pins and wires from the OEM 8 way connectors and put them in the 10 way versions - given its not stock anymore but I am not so worried about this.
