Got rear-ended for Christmas

Thank goodness you both are unharmed,--can't replace people,---That said --What a bummer Christmas pressie:thumbsdown:. Hope all works out well with your claim/repair.

Glad no one was seriously hurt, you should check into the hospital just to make sure. Sometimes the injuries take awhile to kick in. That helps too when the insurance company trys to hold out on you.;)

Glad you and pillion are OK. Me and the wife got hit from behind on my old Harley. We were sitting at a traffic light. Light went green and just as I was taking off the guy who had been stopped behind us somehow didn't notice us there o_O. Knocked us down and pushed us a bit. No serious injury's. I only had PL/PD insurance on bike. The car had no insurance. I ended up getting $400.00 for the damage to my bike. Had to go to court to get that. My arse is still sore from that episode. Hope you make out better mate !

glad you are alright
imho i think that totaling the bike would be best. when hit in the back the bike takes off and the motor tries to stay put might have a bent frame, bent drive tube. maybe damage inside eng&trans.
might ask for a three month guarantee in case a problem comes in later.
good luck in getting back on your ride.

Glad to hear that you and your passenger were substantially unscathed, Craig! It's not a pleasant thing, nonetheless.:(

Having had some experience with this (2 accidents-two totaled bikes) I agree with TURBO 100%, as well. If your insurance works similarly to mine, the bike can be totaled out by your insurer when the cost of repair exceeds approximately 50% of the motorcycles pre-accident value. Of course this varies from company to company and policy class to policy class.

Having to replace the gas tank and radiator alone with OEM parts (which you should insist upon, if they even think about making repairs to the damaged parts) will put you very close to that threshold, so I don't believe that you should have any problem qualifying this as a total loss, largely because of the exorbitant cost to replace OEM parts and if you have replacement value collision coverage. if there's any doubt at all about there being either frame or suspension damage you should insist upon experts evaluating (appraising) your Rocket for either or both!

On top of this any aftermarket parts that survived intact and that you can replace with their OEM counterparts, can be removed from the bike and sold. In each of my two cases, I actually made money on the combined parts sales and settlements which enabled me to "trade up" on the motorcycles, i.e., the wrecked bikes were replaced by better, nicer or newer ones with no out of pocket cost to me!

Good luck with all this. Hopefully it will all work out to your advantage, albeit with some measure of bother.

Not wanting to sound like a broken record...glad you guys weren't hurt.
The bike and shiny bits can be replaced.

Thanks everyone.

My son went to the local doctor yesterday. He has bruising on the lower back. When the bike was hit he was launched forward by the pillion back rest. All looks ok.

As for me, I have woken up this morning with no vision out my left eye. I don't think it's connected to the accident but I'm not ruling that out. I had perfect vision up until now. Just waiting for the doctor to open in about 30 minutes so that I can book an appointment.

They say things happen in threes. Just waiting for the last item now.

Yeh that was my thoughts too. The back wheel took the brunt of the hit. I'm no physicist, but I reckon that force would be transmitted up the drive shaft.

I'll certainly be asking those questions.

also you said the rear guard took the hit it may have twisted rear frame work which hold rear shocks etc and put rear out of alignment
