With the exception of the V-Rod there is no comparison, and I also have a Harley. V-Rod offers comparable performance (1/4 mile anyway) but not worth poop for riding two up. The Harley baggers are nice to cruise on if you don't mind getting whipped by cars. Fred

How does the Harley gear change compare to the R3?

The Harley's I've rented, 05' Electra Glide, 06' Road King, 08' SoftTail Classic and 09' Electra Glide all had about the same clunky shifting as the Rocket III. The Harley's have more of the hit the engine with a hammer sound. The V-Rod I rented shifted really smooth. Rockets Have a lot of gear whine, just the nature of the beast. Thank god for that .I thought it was something major,Ive only just noticed it on mine even though its done 14K,
It Does make you worry though.

I think 3rd gear is the worst at slow speeds up a slight incline

If you are wanting smooth Go with the new Goldwing its awsome but you will get used to the tracktor like gearbox of th R3
