Gearbox sounds

What does a R3 gearbox sound like(tried the search function)?
Mine makes some whirring and very faint whining noises depending on rpm and the load,its done 13000klms
I cant detect any abnormal sloppiness in the drivetrain.
Im just want to ascertain whether they should be dead quiet or is a little noise as described above normal?

Mine whirls and whines when running in gear; changing in tone and disappearing as the rpm's pick up. And clunks/clinks/clanks slightly when shifting gears.

You've much described it. I was (and still am) a big fan of the cartoon, "The Jetson's", and I always thought the Rocket tranny noise at idle was very similar to the sound of their aerocars. I'm told the noise comes from Triumph's use of straight-cut gears, which are the strongest design, though noisy. It just adds to their uniqueness.

Great Sounds like mine is normal. I only bought it 5 days ago and had this horrible feeling that maybe the owner offloaded it because of these noises.

How does it compare to other big bikes like Harleys etc?

Ive found when you take away the soundproofing and rubber boot on a car gearbox,they are also quite noisy.

And the rocket gearbox being out in the open with nothing to hide the noise means you hear it unadulterated 8)

Can't say...I only hear them for a brief moment, and then they're behind me and I can't hear them too well.

Earplugs work, too. To be honest, the first long trip I took I wore earplugs for the wind, mostly. Anyway, after my first fuel stop I forgot to put them back in. Sitting at the intersections and making the slow migration back to the interstate I became real concerned about all that noise...it didn't seem to be that noisy before. Then I realized, "Yeah, it wasn't that noisy before because I was wearing earplugs. Anyway, it was funny to me. I guess you just had to be there. 8) Bottom line...they make their own sound...you go your own way. 8)

Ill be getting ear plugs.
I just did a 350 klm ride and I can still hear the noise from the Jardines 10 minutes after I shut it down :?

A couple of the other guys had choppers with S&S engines and the noise they made was atrocious and in the distance I kept thinking there was something banging inside my engine :shock:

Definitely ear plugs are a must, especially at sustained highway speeds.
