Gearbox blokking problem

The only way into the box is to remove the engine from the bike and to split the crankcase, I have never done it but others here have, most recently ROCKET SCIENTIST who has pretty much re-engineered his gearbox. Warp will think about the problem and have further advise no doubt.

Sounds like a lot of work and a lot of money....
 
A further search on this great forum brings me to member Idk (the legend) who publiced a novel about the fixing of a broken gearbox spring. I still want to believe that's the problem.
After my Greece Vacation next two weeks, it's time to hit this job.
I will post you all about the progression.

Hopefully its just the detent dpring although if yours has not had the update kit then it has the larger solid detent wheel. I drop downt to the shop and look at a early non updated motor maybe I'll be able to simulate a broken detent spring on it with a pair of wire cutters :D when you do the job make sure your in a area where you can pull the bike off the motor if your going to have to split here which I suspect. Could be you have a cir-clip sliding on the shaft which could limit spool movent and shifting. If so the only reason you have not had a cayastrophic failure is because you have not got her up to speed in the higher gears. This is good. Its much easier to fix something before a grenade is tossed into the mix.

HEY the new HARLEYS are having lots of gearbox problems as are the other make bikes we ride with so it is an issue with all brands

I had a email contact with the Triumph factory in the UK. This is what they wrote back to me.
(every handeling by a autorised dealer is registered. You can consult that by givong your last 6 VIN nummers in a email) My 2007 Touring is not known for a missing factory update, besides a electric failure of the electric gear indicator. That is repeared in 2009.
So...I take the risk and am going to open up the front of the engine, build out the clutch and see what I find.
If it turns out to be the worse scenario I will build the complete engine out and bring it to a repairshop.

Keep you all posted of the results.

Ok first it was a update kit not a recall. Depending on the vin number as there was a cutt off where all the update components were put in at the factory. Now the only ones that got them were ones that had to be split open with the engine out of the bike. The vin number break point was on the middle of 2008. Anyone prior to that got it if and only if they had a problem internally like jumping out of second gear which had a change in the gear design.

Is your buddies a silver engine?

Oh and do not be alarmed if your did not get it. Their are plenty out there still running fine with out the kit. It just gives me a idea of what internals you have and quirks/problems that arose during the engines time. Kind of like no one bent any shifting forks until the Roadster years. Or next to no one.

Om a side note you can inspect the detent spring without opening up the engine if you have a scope you can even do it without dropping the oil provided you put the front peg rails on jack stands so the bike is tilted at a sharp angle. This lets the oil in the sump settle to the rear. Then its just a matter of draining the coolant out and pulling the water pump.
Below is a picture I took of my detent spring you can see it is still in place and taught.

My friend and also rocket owner Jan was recently confronted with a shifting/gearboxproblem.
While driving the bike the gearbox suddenly refused to shift into second gear. At first Jan succeeded in shifting back into neutral but after shifting to 1 again it seems to be impossible to get it out of 1st gear. Whatever he tried....its blokked into 1st gear. The clutch works ...the bike can be pushed forward and backwards. Cardan seems to be oke as well and the engine runs smoothly.
Anybody recognizes this problem? Anybody with an idea....or better still...a solution?
the more I look into other makes I see they all have gearbox problems so its a common issue that all the different manufacturers are dealing with maybe they can come up with some automatics tha you can paddle shift like my CORVETTE it works great and NO missed shifts

I have a 91 sportster that I am building up for my nephew. It also has a broken spring. But being descended from Allis Chalmers tractors, there's always a way to shift gears on most Harley's. I will come winter fix it and rebuild the detent plate for good measure.

Thanks warp 9.9 for your advice and support.
My engine is a black and not zilver. Does that make a difference ?For the record; i am pretty sure , that the hole problem started with a jump out of the second gear. Speed was than so low, that I put it in 1e. It all happened in serious traffic, so I had to react quick to keep out of trouble.

Allright !
monday is D-day for my gearproblem. With the help from my Friends, Bob and Kiviet, the engine will be opened and see what we can find out about the source of the mailfunction of my gearbox.
