fuel specification is different for the Touring

I have read with interest the difference of HP and torque of the Touring compared to the other Rockets. I was thinking, like others, of using the mapping of the classic to bump up the power without any other mods.

Leafing through the shop manual for the standard and classic, I noticed the fuel spec is for 89 octane, and the spec in the owner's manual for my Touring is 87 octane. Perhaps they remapped the Touring on purpose to use the lower octane? And maybe better mileage (the Touring has a smaller tank).

Just for grins, using my favored station at todays prices - assuming I put on 5000 miles in 2010:

87 octane 5000mi / 35mpg = 143gal x 2.45$/gal = $350.35
89 octane 5000mi / 35mpg = 143gal x 2.64$/gal = $377.52
-------
$27.17 difference

Not much difference in the grand scheme!

Cheers,

Aren't there other minor physical motor changes that would result in badness by using a classic tune on a touring?

There was other limit that was put in on the touring that's not there on the classic too, was it speed because of the smaller rear tire?

This all can be solve by buying a ECU for a standard or Classic from Pinwall cycle parts. Then the bike would think it is a regular rocket.
Otherwise a dyno remap of the timing should be done to match the octane of the fuel used. Juggs of course is right about the speed limiter which Tune boy has a agreement with Triumph not to excede the rating of the tires.

I'm comming to live in the States.
Jesus $2.45 a gallon, we pay $7.81 a gallon at the moment. but it goes up all the time.

The only physical difference I know of between the standard and touring is the exhaust, downstream of the header. it'd interesting to know how different the flow characteristics are between the two.

Hey, skyrider, Len. I sent you a PM on the 23rd. Did you receive it?

Phil thanks for the reminder, I did send a PM. I am sure we'll meet this summer.
cheers, Len S

Back in the day, high school years, I remember 25 cents/gal. And my brother's Corvette got about 9 miles to the gallon.

Cheers.
