Fuel Gauge on R3T

When I fill up my R3T it takes about 5 or more minutes of riding for the thing to read full. Then it drops like a rock to show about quarter full when its half full. I find though the kms to empty accurate. Anyway I now use my Garmin Zumo to let me know how I am going with the fuel.

I did a lot of research before getting the R3T and found on most forums that the petrol gauge leaves a lot to be desired, but I bought the bike anyway, love it...

So far, my gas gauge actually works right. Miles till empty works right too. Luky me

What I have noticed on my R3t is that if if I let the fuel nozzle click itself off when filling, the gauge goes back to full. However I don't get very far before it starts to move off full. If I fill it to the brim, then the gauge stops at half. If I do this, the DTE is slow to calibrate itself as well. but as the fuel level drops, the DTE and the gauge work their way upwards until the whole system is working properly again.
I have managed 340km out of it on one tank so far. What is the longest the rest of you get? tabledrain

Any suggestions on how to rectify the issue? I am at a loss. I am a step away from taking it to the dealer, but I would like to try and do it myself.

Had the same issue on mine from delivery... Back and forth for two days with the tech line in Georgia.. We found the answer by accident when swapping ECUs for test... The ECU from another bike on the dealer's floor worked fine and they were ready to order me a new one when I noticed that the original ECU worked after being disconnected for an hour or two..

Try this:
1) Fill the tank
2) Disconnect the two ECU cables for a few hours
3) Reconect and ride a couple of miles...

Had the same issue on mine from delivery... Back and forth for two days with Georgia.. Found the answer myself when swapping ECUs for test... The ECU from another bike on the floor worked and they were ready to order one when I noticed that the original ECU worked after being disconnected for an hour or two..

1) Fill the tank
2) Disconnect the two ECU cables for a few hours
3) Reconect and ride a couple of miles...

Voila!!

That sounds like something I would be willing to try. I know that the ECU connection is under the seat.... How do I go about disconnecting it??

Just disconnecting the battery overnight might do it too... There are two big ECU plugs under the right side cover not the seat.. Like I said, fill the tank beforehand..

Triumph's tech line didn't even have an answer as to why this would work.. I suspect it resets the stored calibration values and it forces it to recalibrate the gage.. It wasn't a loose connection or anything like htat, played with connections multiple times and all the scan tool diags and voltages were showing good.

FYI: I still notice that it takes .8mi for the fuel gage to start registering after a fillup.. It works great other than that and is very accurate!!

I have a similar issue and posted it on another thread. When I first took the bike out the gauge dropped to 1/4 after a couple of miles and registered 18 to empty! Dealer replaced the float arm which apparently was bent - you may want to check this? The replacement still isn't great - a mile to register full then drops to half quote quickly. The distance-to-empty works though, as far as I can tell. I fill up at the 15m mark as I'd hate to have to push the beast!! I just ignore it now and clock the miles.

Here's a question though - on an r3t, the fuel 'in' sits below the outer tank when you peer inside. When I fill up, I take it to the inner level, but if I keep trickling fuel it seems to take more - am I not filling it up enough? Can you take it right up to the outer cover??

The tech line said the same thing about the sender or the fuel arm, hopefully yours wasn't installed wrong by the dealer.. Try the ECU reset.. My gage doesn't behave like that at all now and is quite linear.. While the tank is difficult to fill right, it doesn't seem to be mechanical issue..

When mine was acting up, it would only register a 1/2 tank when full and and the fuel light would come on within 25mi the go to empty withing 50.. When the gage was bone dry, it would only take a couple of gallons!!

Im game for a laugh! I'll pull the ECU next time I fill up.

One more thing - in the filler under the cap there is a black rod extending into the channel between the out tank case and the inner filler hole - what's this? Initially I thought it might be the 'fill-to' marker...but this would mean filling beyond the inner hole?
