Front Brake Pad Pinch Bolt

I have a helicoil in one of my front axle pinch bolts because the dealer apparently ran it in with an impact gun and then my buddy the ace mechanic didn't understand that you have to hold the axis of rotation of the rachet in line with the center of the bolt taking out the galled bolt.

Dont despair if you end up not being able to remove the frozen pin. R3 calipers are pretty cheap used.

I have a serviced replacement but these are the original and would like to keep them in service. I'll do some banging today and if it don't work will replace it, then try a reverse drill bit on the bolt head. It has not been six months since the caliper was rebuilt, however I am suspect that someone did a torque check on the brakes when they came off for fork service and that's when they were overtightened and damaged.

No banging needed if they are just torqued to much. Hopefully you removed the R clip or cotter pin if so just cut the pads off the pin and use a set if vice grips to help you break the bolt torque loose. After that you shouldn't need it unless they are cross threaded. If loose clean any burs off the pin from the vice grip and the spin it out. You would be better off removing the caliper completely and doing it on a bench. Removing any burrs is critical so you do not damage the internal threads.

Removed the caliper. Will have both my shops look at it to see who wants to tackle it. It will cost more to remove the retainer pin than what the caliper is worth. None of my front retainer pins have had or had safety pins! Only the rear.

they make impact drivers for removing bolts. u get the correct socket or cut off alen/torx with corect socket. then u twist the tool cclockwise and hit it with hammer.
also u can put pressure on it and tap it with center punch to loosen it.
if it has locktite u can heat it.

Unsuccessful punch and hammer try. It is there for good. It sucks... has almost new pads and a new seals kit.

There are folks who know how to do that -- you'll be disappointed how easily they make it seem.
