I can't answer your question specifically here Nox, but as an aside, make sure that you have the wheel in place and the axel nipped up before you tighten the four nuts holding the diff to the swing arm, this ensures alignment in this area.
Just a wee bit of knowledge I've learn't from this great site.
 
I have no spacer on a classic,just the spring coming from the centre of the shaft,pull the shaft out towards you it goes on pretty easy.
 
As Paul said, it is important to line the axle up with the swing-arm. The spacer is probably the one on the axle and would need to be fitted to ensure proper alignment. This procedure is to make sure there is no load on the wheel bearings. To fit the spline just rotate the drive and apply pressure it should slide on OK. Tighten the drive bolts when the axle is in-line with the swing arm pivot points.
