Federal 245/50/16 looks too big

Hi all

Im keen to dive into the dark side. My mate just gave me a brand new federal 245/50/16 that he was going to try out b4 he sold his rocket.

Just looking at the tyre against the bike it really doesnt look like it will fit under the fender.

Anyone tried this size or brand? Should I look at a 225 instead?

This is my 245/55/16 TOYO it has about 4mm clearance from swing arm and it contacted the rear indicator mounts when fully compressed. It tracks abit but I like it because it feels more solid than the Metz I run it at 30lbs psi.

You say it feels more solid. Do you feel the bike "hinge" at all when you corner? looks like you go from max road contact to much smaller road contact when you lean.

If you ride 2-up then you might need to be concerned about clearance.

A 225/55 seems to be the preferred fit but certainly not the only option.

I just put a Toyo Proxes4 245/50/16 and it fits with no problems. I weigh 220lbs and ride solo.

The Metz always felt over inflated, if you hit gravel on a curve it would slide out easy. The Toyo seems to handle gravel better but will track in ruts, sometimes it feels like it wants to throw you off the road. For highway riding it's good and you don't feel the hinge effect. You will lose some hp with a car tire and in my opinion will have a slower launch in drags from the lights. When cornering it feels like it deforms and lays down more rubber on the road but that depends on inflation levels and load. Good traction for acceleration and straight line braking. It's good if you don't have to travel on crap roads like the one from Uki to Nimbin (went out there the other day and that road is all over the place) on good roads it's great. Just take your time to get used to it and try some uneven surfaces to see what it's like, uneven corners are the worst you will have to lean the bike back to the center to correct it. Thanks mate thats exactly what I needed to know. Im all over that area and the crappy Northcoast roads so I think Ill wait till I move closer to the freeways.
