I like to test different bikes myself. And the 1/4 mile test is a fun one but not needed. I have written several reports since I have been on the site and if I do compare one bike to another, it is one that fits very closely in the same class such as the Roadking and Thunderbird Commander.

The Diavel and the Vmax are pretty closely matched but are still quite a ways apart. For that comparison, I would go with the Star over the Ducati.

Bottom line for me is that nothing really compares with the Rocket. I really love everything about this bike and it suits my needs and desires quite nicely. I will still ride other bikes, just not rate them based on non-standard, standards.

As has been said, not really a straight comparison. Very different bikes. Wouldn't mind having those brakes on the Rocket though. The suspension and brakes are the only things that I really pine for better as standard on the Rocket. Brakes especially.

The Rocket is unique. To my mind the only fair comparison would be to take other 800lb bikes and see how they stack up. To put a Rocket up against something much lighter with a higher revving engine and more sporty set up is meaningless and pointless. Comparing a Rocket to a Diavel or V-Max is a bit like comparing a Thunderbird LT to a Trophy. Meaningless.

...riding fast isn't always about horsepower or how well the bike handles, got more to do with how the rider handles the bike imho...

I bought my R3 for hwy riding and can't imagine anything more fun for long trips. I demo'd the Trophy se and enjoyed the gadgets and wife really liked the legroom and radio but it didn't have 100 ft/lbs of torque at idle! I confess I never owned a liter sport bike so I don't know what i'm missing there. something about going 135 mph on the Rocket with the gauges wobbling like crazy pogoing down the road on the 9 year old springs that really puts me in the moment, duh right The bike doesn't have to spray oil or drop parts on the road to have character.

One of my shooting friends John bought the Ducati . At my age, size and height the Rocket was custom made for me.

When it comes to picking a winner that depends on you and how you ride... ;)

I'll kind of have to agree with the rest of the croud that these 2 bikes dont' seem to be in the exact same category for direct comparisons. The Ducati is a very sporty like cruiser, very light ... it will accelerate and brake faster being half the weight. With that said the Ducati is kind of ugly, but thats what makes it really cool as well. I am not really sure what bike you can use to go head to head with the rocket. Most bikes don't have 3 cylinders but the only cruiser type of bikes it can compare to for "performance" if they had to go head to head would maybe be M109R, C109R, Vulcan 2000, VTX 1800 or something maybe?

That rear license plate holder looks like someone at Ducati forgot to put it on the original design and added it later. Looks out of place to me. Al

HEH HEH HEH I got that same mark on the left peg rail! :D
Along with some engine grinding and sparks.
Don't sell these motors short on handling!
Definitely no sport bike, but a butt kicker in the twisties for an 800+ pound Cruiser!!!
