Hey Guys,

I'm in the middle of a head gasket replacement. Service manual says that I need to pull and reseal all the cylinder head liners. I really don't want to. Can I get away with not doing it?

Hey Hammer!

Did you have to pull the motor to get to the head gasket?

Thanks ….. Dennis

I've done piston changes without pull
pulling the liners although since I was rotating the crankshaft I did rig up some hold downs for the liners during rotation. I'd say you befine if you don't rotate the crank while changing.

I did my pistons, rods, liners, and head change, with the engine still in the frame.

Hey Warp! The reason I ask is I need to replace my head gasket and I really don’t have the facilities to do that kind of work. Any suggestions on just pulling the head?

@warp9.9 is a Jedi who helped me through this process. I did not replace the liners. Not necessary unless damaged, according to Neville Lush....

I just finished a Neville Lush piston and cam rebuild in ""record time"" with no prior experience. I had allowed myself a full five days during the Christmas holidays for the install. Well, now, more than three months later, I’m finally in a position to say, "job completed!" and share this story...

After removing the head, clamp each liner down before rotating the crank, should be ok, but there is always that chance it could go wrong.

I'm not sure what you mean about facilities ;) I did mine in the basement since I had a 12 inch steel beam with a chain fall on a trolley.

Since you are removing the head you will need the cam timing jig to reset the timing.
Alot of the other stuff really depends on the mechanic but once the tank amd seats are off things will be more in view. Stock air plenum verses some type of after market filter system will make a different in assembly and disassembly time only. Are you pulling the front wheel and mud guard or just the mudguard so it doesn't get scratched or damaged when you are pulling the radiator. I've pulled the front with one of the ole lady's thick bath towels over the fender to protect it and shorten time.
One thing for sure is as soon as you remove the seat and tank remove the oil sending unit from head so you don't forget. They break real easy other people will suggest that and they would be right :)

Hey Warp! I’m mechanically inclined with boats and cars, but never worked on a bike. I live in Kemah, TX and am limited to a metal rental storage unit. I really want to keep this bike, but our local Triumph dealer quoted over $3-5k ….. ridiculous!!! I have the time, but limited facilities. On a scale of of 1-10 how difficult would you say the head gasket procedure is???? Thanks
