Do I need to install the Quick-Shifter on my R3GT?

The up-down QS serves 2 purposes. The most useful for me is the auto blip when downshifting. This isn’t quick, per se, it’s just lazy.

Downshifts certainly become much faster and smoother with a blipper. I think I've acquired a clutch dependency from riding a very thuddy Ducati that has no slipper clutch. If you don't clutch and blip the throttle you'll momentarily lock up the back tyre (and probably knacker the gear box). I guess I've now got an unshakeable muscle memory that demands clutch and blip downshifts because I still do it on my other bikes even though it's unnecessary.

I’ve never owned a motorcycle with a QS and learned to clutchless shift up and manual blipping the downshift during my track days. That said, I’ve recently had the opportunity to ride a dealership Rocket and 675 both with QS on 2 separate occasions for a day. On both occasions I stopped using the QS as it’s no fun to me, but also the down shift with QS feels wanting. I do a much better job controlling my rpm and engine braking needs depending on situation.

We all experience things differently, some like stick shifts, others auto, paddles or QS. If you’re paddle/playstation type rider the QS is a no brainer. Works as advertised and is effortless.

I watched a Youtube vid earlier where two lads had a drag race between a Rocket and a 1260 Diavel.
The Diavel won but they did say the Rocket rapidly run out of revs and hit the rev limiter through the gears which slowed it down, whereas the Diavel revved out further and had launch control and a QS (although even launch control couldn't match the Rocket's initial thrust). They thought it would have been a different story if the Rocket had a QS.
It did win 0-60 and all roll-on tests up to 100 mph when the Diavel caught up and overhauled it. I think the Rocket would have won outright if it had been remapped and had all its restrictions removed.

I didn't get it when I bought it new but I see some on here use it. I see other models like the Triumph Triple has it.

I like to launch it from start, I like to accelerate in traffic. Ok, I ride it like its stolen (when the wife's not looking)!

Do you recommend it and if so, why??

Any drawbacks, things I ought to know before getting it installed? More info the better...

Absolutely. one of the best additions I have made to my 2020 GT. Nothing much more fun than running through all the gears with the throttle pegged the whole time! Plus if you are lazy like me it makes running around town that much easier. I have just under 90,000 miles on the Rocket now and never one issue with the quick shifter,

...i saw that too..i'm thinking the Rocket had the stock tune and wasn't getting 100% fuel at full chat!...It would make a difference if it was remapped for sure.

Yes I think it was a completely stock bike. Can't wait to get mine remapped next year. Just waiting for Paul Bryant's exhaust to come on stream. May even turbo it the year after when the warranty expires.
If I did that I may even get a QS...

Ive had the pleasure to see Pauls prototype 2inch exhaust system on a bike...it had been tuned as well. I was following it so experienced the mass of angry bee's sound as it accelerated away from me!...It just flies!..Very awesome!

stock tune will make a huge difference. Few bikes will out drag a Rocket through the first few gears, 2nd in particular has “god-mode” but the bikes aerodynamic shape will hold it back significantly and so does the gearing. unlimited it will top out around 265km at 7100rpm. Fix these to parameters and the Rocket will out run nearly anything!

Edit - Metzeler Cruisetec hugely improves traction over the Avon’s too…

I've also found it's great for days like today, where it's 20F (-7 C) and not having to use the clutch so much keeps my left hand warmer. The cold from the metal "bleeds" through the glove quickly.
