I have a 2005 with 10,500 miles, i've put about 1500 on it and have had no issues other than a burned out fog light.
Noticed the other day that when starting that nothing happened when i hit the starter button. Had the kick stand up, in neutral. all lights working and heard pump. i let out on the clutch and pulled back in, it fired right up. today, same thing but i had to release and reengage the clutch three times before the start button did anything. i was careful to listen when i pushed the button and heard nothing at all. Thanks in advance for any input.

Probably the ignition switch. A solder joint has overheated and failed. To take it apart and repair it you will have to remove 2 tamper proof screws and re-order the wire. Then install an Eastern Beaver or you will have the same problem again.

I had this same problem with my 05 a few months ago. Put in a new ignition switch with eastern beaver mod. still had same problem. I took apart the starter button and found the contact points were fouled, cleaned them up with wife's nail file, all good since. did not tell the wife about the file. if you try this be careful taking it apart there is a small spring in there that must go back same way up as it came out.

When you say nothing happens, do you notice the headlights going out or not when you hit the starter button?

From what you describe, I'd check this sequence:

  1. Clutch switch - clean if you can. Use a small screwdriver on the underside of the switch to remove it from the housing. I had a switch go bad and had to replace it.
  2. Starter button and relay - this is chicken and egg first scenario. If the headlights do NOT go out when you hit the starter button, either the switch is fouled or the relay is bad. You can use a voltage meter to check the white/red wire feeding into the relay. When you hit the starter button, you should see voltage on the wire. If you don't then it is most likely the button being fouled. If you do, then the relay is most likely bad. If the headlights do go out when you hit the starter button, then you need to move to the next stage.
Regardless of what your issue it, having a 2005 model REQUIRES that you fit a headlight relay kit such as the Easter Beaver kit. I'm a solid advocate of this. You WILL regret that you haven't if you chose to ignore this.

Forgot to thank you for the very helpful info, saved me some time and aggravation. Cleaned and greased up the switch, also had just a little corrosion on the negative battery post. Did the job and have had no problems since. Will be putting in the Easter Beaver Kit soon,
Thanks again and happy riding

Good to hear. Once you get the headlight relay kit fitted, you should also look to do the secondary starter relay mod and the negative battery cable mod.

good to hear you got it sorted that poor old clutch switch sit up there coping all the crap nature can throw at it
