Hope it sorts your problem Nat;) ...But seriously guys were these bike engines conceived and designed on the back of a cigarette packet and the development left to its customers:rolleyes: To make a gear linkage heavier than the spring can handle just boggles the mindo_O

I think with it all , when good all works well but a below par return spring , detent spring or circlip can wreak havoc it seems ?

It blows my mind that a spring that is such a low quality that it could actually weaken in tension would ever be put into something with this much power
I know .
Exactly can be said for the gearbox circlip s or the ridiculous depth of their groove . I have owned lots of bikes over the years and have never had such an issue !

NAT, I believe I having issue with the gear shift spring too. Mine is an 06 with 85k. Sometimes after a long ride I cannot downshift, the lever doesn't click back up. Other than that no shifting issues.

Anyway since it takes about a month to get them I ordered a bunch of parts just in case as I'm not sure what I'll be seeing once I open it up.

I wonder... Can we change the whole assembly from the front? The shop manual isn't clear (to me)
I mean can I pull the whole assembly from the front or stuff (forks) will be falling into the transmission?

I fully accept that , but the issue on mine is a real one and definitely was no surprise to my mate . Bear in mind my bike is a 2010 with only 10000 miles . I am dubious about it being able to make the bike jump out of gear whilst under acceleration , but can see it as being perfectly feasible whilst cruising or throttling down ! It is after all , a heavy shift lever and linkage . Especially if one also has a heel shifter .
My heal shifter was the first thing to come off the bike when I bought it.

The only things you can do from the front , are the lever return spring and the detent spring ! The return spring is as @Rocket Scientist photo at the beginning of this thread , and retained by a circlip ! Before you take anything apart tho , undo the gear linkage and feel the spring tension on the actuator arm . Also make sure the actuator arm is lined up with it's Mark on the shaft as this can affect shifting . A problem with the return spring will be obvious in the tension of the arm !
Good luck .

In retrospect , your problem sounds more like the detent spring ! I am no rocket gearbox expert tho , and many others here have been inside their gearboxes and can walk you thru this . The symptoms of the return spring tho will be your gear lever flopping about at all times and an easy fix !

Well... I found out I don't have a 30mm socket ... I do now! lol

When putting the front engine cover back on, Should I put something on the paper seal?
I'm thinking gasket dressing or sealant
