I'd be concerned about that being a sign of metal fatigue and the risk of the spring breaking and shrapnel getting caught in the spinning clutch basket or the input/crank gear

Yup ! You have convinced me . Not what I want to hear , but certainly the voice of reason ! I must investigate .

I am finding a lot less resistance in the return of my gear lever , gearbox is tight , no shift or neutral issues . Is it the beginning of the end for the detent spring or am I just being paranoid ?
I think your paranoid dont take it apart if everything is right with the shifting

Nor have I ! Shifts smooth as a cashmere codpiece , it's just the lever bouncing up and down over road bumps that's concerning me . Paranoid ? Yes . What ? Who said that ? :banghead:

I have never seen a weak or broken spring in any bike I have ever owned or even ever heard of one ! And I would certainly rather be riding it than taking it apart during the season !

Nat check the bushing on the gear lever and shaft holding it...a lot of movement here can give the illusion its behind the cover and spring related, plus this item and badly worn ball joints can make the gear lever bounce around when riding;)

That is a good point there Brian , thanks !
Altho with the gear lever and linkage removed , there is no where near the spring resistance on the actuator arm as there was !
