So, I have a bad knee that is currently preventing me from taking the cutch apart. Decided to have the dealer look at my clutch. He told me the detent spring is bad and that the cost will be around 5K with around 25 hours work. I just laughed. On my way to pick it up now. I need someone in the Pittsburgh area to do this work for me.

More important thing to do is ask where the dealer gets his pot that shizt got to be so good your knee won't hurt.

Please remember the instructions available in the signature for @idk .

Any conscientious person with some tools can get it done -- perhaps a "with-it" high school student in your garage under your supervision ?

@slydog75 is in need of some experienced input for his bike -- perhaps he could trade fixing your detent spring ?

Ok, so I spoke to the mechanic. He is telling me that he doesn't believe it is the clutch or detent spring. He think it's likely a "cutch fork" or a worn shaft. He is convinced that he needs to tear the engine out to get to all of the possible parts. Since my symptoms are slipping in second gear at 2K and 3K (it slips and grabs when I am over half throttle and applying decent torque like going up a hill), and popping out of second when accelerating hard (WOT), I am back to the drawing board. I really don't want to get rid of the old gal.

Got ya Joe. This may be a winter project. Unfortunately Slydog75 is at the opposite end of the state about a 5 hour drive.

Hi all. I am checking in here after being away for several years. I had a 2005 RIII and had the detent spring fail. Then, it was a known design weakness and I had the understanding that by the 2007 model year Triumph had redesigned (basically by adding a lock nut) and that this was no longer a problem. In my case, Triumph had an "update kit" available and the repairs were done under at no charge to me.

I am surprised to read that this (or a similar) problem still exists. When mine failed I was in fifth gear. Fortunately, I discovered that the RIII can start from a dead stop in fifth gear. Not recommended, but doable.
