Done - What's the big deal??
Took the bike in for 10k service and tire mount Saturday. Didn't get to pick it up til Thursday evening, thereby missing 5 great riding days.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Baltimore area, it's an ugly ride from the dealership to my home, even when it's not early rush hour. All heavy-traffic, high-speed madness. Not exactly what I wanted to be my first ride on a new tire that would in theory, turn my bike into an unstable death trap.
When the service guy brought the bike out, he asked if he could ride it around the lot. He's obviously a better rider than me and I was impressed watching him throw my bike around like it was nothing. Tight circles and zig-zags - all low speed stuff where this tire is supposed to make the bike unmanageable. All he said was, "Much better than I expected! I can feel it just a little in the transitions." Now, my turn. A few laps around the lot (nothing like his) and then off to the races. Twenty minutes later and I'm home. Ho-hum.
Next morning while it's cold, I measure tire pressure to see what the dealer had put in. 38psi on the front Metz, which is where I always ran it, and 45 on the rear! I dropped it to 36 which is probably a little higher than what the forum consensus seems to be. Took a short ride and immediately did not like it. Back up to 45 and it felt completely normal.
I gas up the bike, and the wife and I are off on a day trip to Ocean City and Delmarva Bike Week, about 130 miles one way. Friday evening and 350 miles later we're back home. This whole trip was a good mix of hiway, backroad and stop-and-go traffic. The only time I can say I noticed any difference at all between the OEM Metz and the Yoko was crossing a steel grate (twice just to be sure) and a section of road with narrow parallel grooves. The Metz would have handled the steel grate far better and I probably never would have noticed the grooved pavement. Not reason enough to make me ditch the Yoko.
I recall reading somewhere that for bikes, uninterrupted grooves running the circumference of the tire is detrimental to handling on grates and grooved surfaces. This would seem to be true as most modern bike tires do not have such grooves while my Yoko has four. Maybe a tread pattern more like those below would help eliminate the "grate/grove squirm".

All of the above just to say: If roads were made exclusively of steel grates and grooved pavement, car tires on a motorcycle might be a bad idea. Keep in mind this impression is based on less than 400 miles of CT experience.
Now, the whole reason for this post - the Yoko max inflation pressure is 51 psi, so beyond center tread wear, does anyone see a problem leaving it at 45?
Sorry to be so long-winded.
