CUTTING THE BEAR CLAWS

All your comments and advise are really appreciated, thank you all:thumbsup:; I was thinking of the K&Ns , but read on here there may be issues with fasteners cracking ?.--
---Advise on the best types would be welcomed as well. (I'm a keen fettler:)),--but no great mechanic..

Looks like I'll need ta get a Dremel. o_O
The filter cracking problem is the RAM Air filter not the K&N. With the 2780's on a classic, standard, Roadster you would not need to cut the claw if you do not want to. other K&N's like the 4040-1 you would need to cut the claw Like Hanos's

or you could go with a different filter

I can see where a dremel motor will do it I had one but the jig saw ram thru it so well I made one cut put the chrome trim on and was done. It was easy to follow the line on the tape the first time.

And yes thats the kind of look I'd like, are the benefits = to the expense / effort ?, Warp 9.9:unsure: --

& thanks again for reply:thumbsup:

Was not hard to do mine just get an idea where you want cut it mark and cut from inside and trim as nessasary it you have the shape then finish wit a rat tail file draw it along the edge till it is nice and smooth, you would not cut yourself on mine but I want to give a neat finish so bought the chrome. Trim of e-bay

My K&N set up was not hard either as it was done by Hanso and yes it pulled good horse power numbers. The Piper cross one I have not had on a dyno I did notice a large change in the A/F ratio leaning out. I hope to test the piper-cross filter this year. I did not keep much track on the money I spent for the piper cross I think it was around 100 bucks. For me since my engines are not stock they really benefit from better breathing. I must also add that is is so much easier working on top of the motor when the air ducting is gone so that alone makes it worth it IMO. Especially since I do all my bike work as the closest dealer is 200 miles away.

Another thing to keep in mind is fitment of the filter verses the operator. I did notice a difference with the K&N filters using standard pegs and the Classic Floor Boards. I liked the feel with the floor boards better then the pegs. I can not speak as to fit with roadster pegs. I even had to do some proving out with the Piper-Cross filter and riding position. If you chose to go with smaller filters or something like the UNI foam filters you will not have to worry about that.

Mask tape the entire claw more than once... make it thick...before going at it with a cutting wheel. If by chance you let the wheel get away from you and hit the area you're not going to cut away then you won't mess up your claw.

Me likes this suggestion.
