Contemtplating trading the rocket for a ktm 1290 adventure

I demoed the 1290 SD and for a few days I couldn't think of anything else, That motor is the real deal. Good luck whatever you do. My only suggestion is to ride all of the bikes in that class for as long as they'll let you because I don't think 10-20 miles is enough.

I can't afford two bikes, and the adventure does more.

A couple of years ago I found a reasonably near new DR650, 3 years old, 3,000 miles, 2500 bucks. I've kind of turned it into a poor man's adventure bike, but what I love most about it is the 400 lb. mass and ease on fire and forest roads. I could actually do some light adv. touring with it, and plan on it next year. But, I hear you about the KTM. Personally, the 800 Tiger is probably more right than the KTM for me, but 18,000 bucks???

The 800XC lists for $12.4, the XCX with all the bells and whistles is $13.5. The 1290 Adventure is painfully expensive...but it's a lot of bike. About the same HP as the Rocket (though not nearly the torque) in a ~525lb package with an off-road suspension. Lots to like. I also had a DR650, paid a bit more than that (not much) but it came with the IMS tank (essential for decent range), I added skid plate, carb mods and few more goodies. I did have to drop a good bit of coin on a Race Tech suspension mods. Had a lot of fun, but thought I wanted something more dirt oriented, sold it for a WR250R...eventually decided neither of them were real comfortable on long trips or street riding and migrated to the Tiger. Love that bike!

Have you thought about the 2012 onwards v strom 650 ,, there very cheap , bullet proof engines and more than capable of light adventure stuff , there cheap enough you can own both ,, I just bought a harley and had every intention of selling my v strom , but its not worth much , 18 000 klm 3 grands worth of extras and its only worth around 5-6 grand Great all round bike

I think when i test ride the ktm, i'll also try the bmw gsa, just to be sure

Do what I did. Find a good used adv bike. I bought my '96 BMW R1100GS for $5,500. Perfect condition 67k miles. Had it 6 months and love it for around town and trails. Ride the R3R for long trips but would take the BMW anywhere as well.
