Considering a Rocket vs an Indian

Thanks again everyone for the input.

So yes...

Here is where I am at.

ROCKET (Set up like this minus the bags)

PROS:
  1. Power, speed, torque, smooth running engine and more power.
  2. Awesome looks.
  3. $5K cheaper than the Indian Dark Horse. 15K out the door with everything I want on it.
  4. Only needs a sissy bar, windshield, and some minimalist luggage to be everything I want it to be. (and possibly handlebar risers)
  5. No performance mods needed. I may do the intake, a ECU flash and some pipes in the future BUT I think this bike has balls to spare as is.
CONS:

  1. On first blush not the most comfortable riding position. I got to look into handlebar risers. Not sure if this is the bike I can do some touring on??
  2. Handling is a little weird at low speed...
  3. Got to make sure the wife can be comfortable on the back.

INDIAN CHIEF DARK HORSE (Set up like this minus the bags)

PROS

  1. Comfortable ride for me and the wife.
  2. Easy handling despite being big and heavy
  3. Awesome looks and style
  4. Possibly better resale value percentage.
CONS

  1. $5K more than the Rocket as shown
  2. Not sure if it has enough power to keep me not wanting a 2.3 liter motor.
  3. Possible heat issues in New Mexico Summers due to being air cooled???
  4. Need to add a $400 high flow air cleaner, $1000 in pipes and $500 in cams for it to preform at potential.
Thoughts ????

I've got the pipes and the air cleaner on my RoadMaster, The pipes I got for free because at the time Indian was offering $1000.00 in free accessories.

However if I had it to do over again I would've gotten different accessories and then had the Freedom True Duals Exhaust installed at my own expense .

I don't have the cam's installed. And most of the guys on the Indian forum that do have them installed say that the performance gains were minimal.

The rear cylinder does put out a lot of heat, but I hardly notice it anymore.

THATS strange I dont like the way the Indian handles and it feels like a big slow Harley clone with oversized controls and ugly guages and weird retro styling and is not exciting and the seat left diamond impressions on my AZZ after 1/2 hour of trying to ride that hot MF in traffic those things are worse than the Harleys with all the engine heat twice as hot as my ROCKET

YES doesnt make sense to do those mods and not get a decent boost in HP

I will have to test ride a zx14 before I make a decision, I don't need the bells and whistles, I already have them on the k1200gt.

The ZX-14R is an awesome machine performance-wise, even stock but for better ergos I put on risers and lowering pegs. Then 2 Brothers CF cans and a windscreen and it is good to go!

Resale on ZX-14s are typically low so you can get them priced right and most have low mileage. Part of the reason is that insurance on young riders is usually through the roof so they go for the liter bikes which limits the buyers. FWIW - Insurance on my ZX-14 R is the same as the combined total for my other 4 bikes - all with the same coverage limits...

My insurance company just rates it as another Touring bike. It is about the same cost to insure as the Vaquero or the R3T. I carry full coverage, but I've got a very large and diverse bundle with the American company, as well as an umbrella.

In Europe the ZX14R is considered a touring bike. You can add bags, windscreens, risers, lower pegs, etc.

I guess we've officially high jacked the thread.

I don't know about the ZX-14R but I owned a 06 ZX-10R for about six months. AWESOME BIKE!

The faster you went the better it handled. Traded it in on the Roadster before I killed myself. Road raced a guy on a Suzuki GXR 600 on some back roads. We was both going 145 with him in the lead. I said enough of this crap and went by him going 152 he tried to keep up but he lost. Those days are behind me now.
I miss that bike but knew I needed to get rid of it because I have little will power....lol

YES thats dangerous riding

I mentioned the SD gt because it's a naked upright bike NOT sportbike, that has an adjustable screen, bags, cruise control and semiactive suspension but mostly because it gives art fits.
