Well, I dunno, but if you leave that O-ring off altogether, it has the same effect as removing the drain plug - all the oil from the oil tank drains down.....which, after all, is how you drain the oil .......so I reckon the O-ring is at least partly to stop that happening during normal use...????
Workshop manual is vague about how the non-return system works.... I could be marginally less than totally correct.......

Yeah, Warp, I know - but what's the lil' O-ring do?? I reckon it's to allow the oil tank to drain PAST the non-return valve when you remove the sump drain plug....?????

At first glance this morning the O-ring is to seal the plug as it is in th ethicker area of the sump where the others are shorties. it also then plugs the drain. The non return looks to be on the pressure side and I would suspect it is there so oil does not syphon out of the pressure side retreating backwards thru the filter in a sense backwashing the grit out of the filter. I will look more tonight as I have to get ready for work.
