Cold starting

This is a subject that has been very close to my heart recently. There are numerous threads here and on the other site, the subject. I'll find my info and post it shortly.

nice work j3..your post alone should be a sticky on this board...cold weather starting fixes

I just know how frustrating it was for me and if I can help I'm glad to. If memory serves you were one of the ones to offer to get me the starter so thanks again for that.

Great Post J3!!! Its nice to see a Rocket Technical thread on this site verses Politicing Religous stuff which has swamped this site :D

I have not done some of these mods yet but am poised to do the starter and ignition work this winter. I did double up on the ground cable and added a extra Lithium Ferrous battery to incrase my cold cranking amps to 900. Worked great down to 4 degrees F. Of course I was just testing i would never ride at them temperatures :)

Just to get me riding I placed a little fan heater under the engine, which worked. I messed with the idea of adding heat (like a block heater kinda deal) but the problem with that is it needs to be plugged in. Fine for going for a ride and returning home but God forbid I stopped anywhere and the engine cooled down.

While I'm sure I didn't need ALL the mods I did, none of them were a huge amount of work and the result was certainly worth it (with the exception of the $270 on a battery). The riding season here is short enough as it is.

I did find an article on a Paramedic site about how even a small LiFePO4 battery in parallel keeps a lead acid battery charged to perfection. Basically it's like having an on board trickle charger. It was recommended for Ambulances in small towns that may not get used daily.

There are a lot of LiFePO4 STARTER batteries appearing - do NOT get these confused with often cheaper deep storage batteries, which DO NOT DUMP DISCHARGE.

I have never (temping fate) had an issue starting in any temps - but mine sleeps indoors.

Bigger starters - NEED more amps. Basic electricity.

I am no electrician but once I added the 600CCA Lithium Battery tthe starter acted like it was strong enopugh to pull a 30 foot trailer. If Mine is outside it is in a enclosed trailer. I must admit I bring her into the basement during the winter to do upgrades. This year special head bolts intercooler goes back on and then it time to add at least one steering dampner and a few other goodies in case I get to hit the Ohio Mile in spring :)

Bit odd, this talk about heating up the oil in the sump, there's not supposed to be much oil in the sump. You oughta be heating the oil tank.....:?:
