Clarification on Cams

I've been asked by PM if Nev's cams are a worthwhile addition to a supercharged R3. I need to point out that I put in a special grind intake cam with Nev's mild exhaust cam before I installed the supercharger. This pair of cams was specially designed by Nev to work with my Ram Air. YES, they were well worth the money. Now I have an even longer duration exhaust cam designed by Nev to work with the supercharger (so both cams are longer duration than both stock and Nev's "mild" cams). I don't really have any before/after cam change HP figures to give with the supercharger alone... the supercharger boosted my Ram Air cams by 100 HP.

I can tell you this, and Nev agrees with me... I think Triumph de-tuned the original R3 engine design by putting in very tame cams. Probably the R3 engine was deemed "too dangerous" by corporate pencil necks. We both feel the stock engine is totally choked by the stock cams. Nev's "mild" cams just bring the engine back to where it should be in the first place.

So if you want a supercharged R3 that is totally reliable and makes it's best power throughout the normal RPM range, I would say Nev's mild cams are worthwhile.

If you want even more power, edging the engine up into the race zone, then you want the special long duration cams Nev designed for me. These move the torque band higher in the RPM range, but make more power by letting a supercharged engine breathe even better. Turning your engine higher (7250 RPM) will shorten it's life span... but to me this is a fair trade off.

So it really depends on what you want out of your bike. Nev's cams are expensive, but they are well designed... and the only R3 cams in town at present. :cool:

Something I need to add is that Nev's mild cams are "drop in" cams. That it, if your shims are correct you will not need to re-shim or re-time the cams.

This is NOT the case with the custom long duration supercharger cams. These cams require you to set the lobe centers, and check valve to piston clearances. If you don't know how to do this, or don't have a competent engine builder that can do it for you, do not buy these cams. :cool:
 
ohhh I so badly want Nevs cams and lock up clutch ( kinda have to have the clutch too huh?)

I was talkign to my dealer about the cams and he kept saying they could not be just dropped in, that they have to be degreed etc...

from the photos I've seen of the cam cover removed, I think I could do it myself...

I've not experinced any clutch problems yet, but I'm assuming that the lock up would almost be required to handle the additional power if I updated cams???
 
As usual, dealers seem to know very little. Nev's drop in cams do not require "dial in", and if your shins are correct before the cam swap they will be correct with the mild cams.

Chad, I'm certain you could install both the mild cams and the lock-up clutch yourself. If you had any questions I could guide you through it. The bad news is that the mild cams will put you over 160 SAE RWHP... necessitating the lock-up clutch.

V-stacks, mild cams, and Sam's pipes would be a very potent combo. :D

hombre, My dealer has a Rocket that they race for record speed I thinks it's 154 miles I think there rules to that you can only do so much to it because I'm sure you can get up to 154 miles befor they can.
But anyhow they said that they bore the cylinders and put high performanc cams in there and there getting 164 HP and 167 torque.
My question to you is whats the difference of Nev's cams compared to just a high performance cam? And if I did that and got that kind of HP and Torque could I get away with just haveing the stock clutch? Right now they put a metal plate behind my throtle body so my K&N filters will not get hot air from the motor and they put the K&N filters on and I have the Jardine exhaust and they dyno it and I'm getting 149.8 HP and 149.8 torque. If I did what they said they did will I shorten the life of my engine? Will it be just has dependable as it is now? I hope I explaned it good enough

As far as I know only Nev is making cams for the R3.
As far as the clutch goes,a stock clutch wont handle much over 150/155 rwhp so you will probably need Nev lock up clutch;)
The cams should not shorten the life of your engine,but your right hand might:D

Nev's "mild cams" are not really high performance cams... they are mild performance cams. They will boost your HP to 160+ SAE RWHP... same as your dealer's cams. These cams will not appreciably shorten the life of your engine, if you ride it with sanity (never over 7000 RPM)... but with the HP & TQ boost you will need a lock-up clutch. The stock R3 clutch starts to slip around 153 HP/156 TQ.

If you want "high performance" cams you must go to longer duration cams (which I mention above)... but you will need high compression, through either high comp pistons, or turbo/supercharger boost. A high comp or boosted engine will have a shorter life. :cool:

I thought the Rocket had removable wet liners (I've never had one apart but I think that what the service manual says). If thats the case, not much room there to bore, if you have a cylinder problem you press in a new liner, you don't bore it.

I wonder if someone could manufacture oversize liners? That would be splitting hairs, the Rocket has plenty of displacement. Best bang for the buck is what Hombre is doing.

thanks you guys I think for now I'm going be happy what I have .
It sounds like after 150 Hp and you want more it starts to cost a lot more.
But it must be a rush to have that much more HP but the cost yikes it's great if you can do the work your self . Instead of spending $1000,00 on a lock up clutch is there a less expensive clutch that could hadle the extra HP that Nev cams will give?
