My Rocket starts fine at 25 F with the 3 year old stock battery. I have a 1980 BMW r65 with a side car that I ride in winter, I've started it at 14 F, but you better have a full charge, it cranks a while.

I'll give you that...but every now and then we'll get temps in the teens and occasionally in the single digits. Northwest FL gets some cold weather in the winter contrary to popular misconceptions...but we usually do not see the snow.

My 09 still has the stock battery. Never has failed to start.

My 05' still has the original stock battery and has never failed to start. Hope I didn't just jinx myself

Glad you posted, cause I wouldn't. There's no doubt you just jinxed yourself.

Just because the engine starts, doe not mean that the battery is good.
I REGULARLY see 10% drop in output due to a marginal battery. This is throughout the entire operating range. Replace the battery, and the output increases.

Something to be aware.

Wayne, are you saying that a new battery can increase output (horsepower/torque) by up to 10%?

I assumed that when the bike was running, the battery was rather inconsequential. Was I wrong?

Isn't starting the engine kinda one of the batteries main responsibilities ? I believe my battery was probably made on a Wednesday

A battery is a RESERVOIR for the electrical system, so that when the ignition, fuel pump, fuel injectors, etc. out run the capacity of the charging system, the battery provides what is needed. If the battery is less than adequate, it no longer acts as a reservoir, and instead acts like a limitation. As a result, peak demand out-runs supply, and output suffers. I REGULARLY see 10% differences between a good battery, and one that starts well, but does not charge well.

Test your batteries!!!
