i'm wondering about heat numbers & effects etc.

ok so my manual says NGK DPR7EA9, 2 per cylinder. however a few online sources say DPR8EA-9.
i'd be inclined to trust the manual.

anyway, i got DPR7EIX-9, what appears to be the iridium equivalent of the standard 7s the manual specifies.

anyone schooled up on this stuff?

:D

If you haven't tweaked the compression it doesn't make much difference. The engine is a low compression type (8.5:1) so a lower heat range works fine. The iridiums use a finer wire which causes the spark energy to be more concentrated without any bad side effects. What ever plug is used the color of the plug should be a light chocolate brown if checked under load. So you should be fine. Look at the electrode tips of the old plugs when you pull them, they can reveal fuel mix problems. BTW running rich will soot up any plug since you will soot up everything past the intake valves.

i see. bit of googling there says rule of thumb is to go one step colder per 75-100hp added. anyone use a colder plug after carpentering their engine?

I use the irridiums ony I closed the gap on them so I would not blow the spark out. Was going to try the Nolgy silver plugs but I had not got around to changing them (as the irridiums are working) so I sent the set to Peter in Oz with his new starter. The Nolgy ones are pricey !!!!!!!

Anybody tried GAPLESS plugs on an R3? . Just out of interest. Stuff like BRISK do.

I had some similar NGK plugs in a Guzzi LeMans2 ages ago and it got it started easier. Never bothered in the Buell or the current aged Guzzi V1000G5. But these things are there to try out.
