Another Avon Problem

Just curious why alot of Rocket riders are always trying to reinvent the wheel.. ? What is it about the Metzler ME880's that you don't like.

My only issue was durability but since ive stopped spinning it out of every corner i havent had a drama im happy with the metz think ill stick with it.

I think I get more milage out of front Avon an I never liked the Metz in the wet. Between me an my rocket ownin mate we've been through 10 sets of avons with 1 problem with 1 rear.Still, not very confidence inspiring for Greyfox .

I had Metz didn't like'm got Avon Cobra's no probs, little tricky on wet oily Aussie roads but so was the Metz, may try Bridges next or stay with Avon, price will decide for me.

Keeping Air in the **** things is my problem :(

Well, at it again. This is my second AVON rear tire problem. The company replaced the last one with no problem after 3 months (refund of course). This time it is a crack in the sidewall. Pressure has never been below 39psi. Take it off, make the trip, wait wait wait.
Darn it!

How long did this one last before it happened to ya.
Didn't say what failed on the first one but 3 months wasn't good.
I'd be pretty concerned if this one was only around the same distance, and even more so if it was the same fault.

Maybe the 2 were from the same batch. Bit of Mondayitis.

The last time this happened with Avon it was the tread that was tearing.I know cause a friend of mine has a bike shop (he fits all my tyres) and he got a recall notice from them telling him the batch no and they also told him that it was his responsibilty to contact his customers regarding replacement..I wonder if there's gonna be another recall. What have avon said ?

I was waffling between Avon and Bridgestones. Just ordered a pair of Bridgestones from Bike Bandit for $286 with AMA discount. G701 front and Exedra Max rear. I appreciate the information on this site. Reminds me a little bit of another I'm particularly fond of...:D

Now... does anyone have a cheap source for Windvests?

Yes, Phil, 150/80x17. Thought about trying a 140; maybe next time.

TRIIICK, I had no real problem with Metz; was on the bike when I got it and I put one other on. I wasn't riding as hard back then as I was still getting used to the bike - well, not round corners anyway. I was probably liking the 'feel' of the acceleration tho :D. Problem was I only 4,800km out of them. How some guys are getting 3 times that amazes me.. Front seemed OK.

Switched to Avon front and back. Instantly better handling, especially the front. Very sure in corners and never a slip in the wet. The rear was great too except in a straight line in the wet when it would spin with ease. I'm sure that tended to make me a bit more tentative in corners but it handled fine. Good part was I got almost 7,000km out of the rear, shortened a little by a puncture. Might have been good for another 1,000-1,500. The front Avons have been giving me around 9-10,000km.

Exedra Max has already outlived the Avon and is not much more than 1/2 worn, maybe 2/3. It's handling and ride are outstanding with great grip in the wet and the extra air (higher profile) makes it quieter and softer over bumps as well as raising the gearing just enough to notice. That means for the way I ride that I tend to be more on the power when I'm coming out of a corner. Others will find it different. I'll now try the G701 on the front but unless it's better than the Avon I'll go back to that in a flash.

My mileage is a bit low I know, but that's because I like to ride hard. Not fast everywhere but I like to accelerate quickly and love pushing through corners. Covering 25,000km + a year helps as it means I only have them on for 4-6 months. So I'm not reinventing the wheel, just trying them all out and finding what works best for me.

contacted local avon dealer

The first Avon went on at 26K. It came off at 30.5K and still looked new. Some where I posted pics but the radial joint was showing where they put the tread rubber together. There are two compounds here and only the harder compound was showing the crack. Now I have 35.7K , still looks new but a sidewall crack. (It's been a year- I know but hard times didn't allow time for road trips) Tried to show the wife tonight and had a hard time showing it since I had moved the bike. Noticed that the crack only opened when the crack was exactly as shown, with the full bike weight on it! Tells me somethings wrong with the belts. Makes me buttocks pucker since I pulled a 120 mph run last week for a couple of miles.
Local dealer wanted the picture to contact the US rep and will get back with me.

The way I see it is the quality control of Avon is absolutely unexceptable those faults should be picked up before the tire reaches the customer . It's all well and good to recall them but too bad if someone loses their life. I won't be ever using them
