Welcome Stu, Check the key way on the lower gear as not all of them were bad. You will know as it will be very sloppy. You can check without releasing the timing. It would be easy if the front cover was off fixing the clutch.

Welcome Stu from the sunny south that is the state of Georgia. I too am a HVAC tech, not retired "yet" but hope to in 5 years. I have a 2005 standard with 33000 Miles(53000km). So far I haven't had to go into the motor for anything...knock on wood. I wish warm sunny rides.

Hi from the great white north, Retired 50 something HVAC Mechanic.had my R3 from new and was out of commission like its owner for the last few yrs (long story).Took her out for a spin last week and the clutched failed. used the site info to fix it up , long story short the flat bearing ground into the outer clutch basket plate due to missing washer , got parts for free from dealer and fixed it up.Now looking into the paint can rattle (Cam chain drive failure) and fix ,lots of info on that here also.Great site with a huge knowledge base.

Checking the shims tomorrow and going to fab a bucket depressor tool also,Was surprised to see ware/little crevasses running horizontally on the over head cam gear slopes on the business sides of the teeth,looking with a magnifying loop, nothing to worry about but strange.Ordered some of the high content Molly Honda spline lube for some drive spline maint and picking up some relays to rewire the headlights to run battery direct . Hears hoping that will be that for quite a while getting tired of working on the Beast.
PS that cam chain likes to hop the sprockets with the lobe torque at any sign of chain slack like a bunny on fire LOL guess |I should have made the locking tool
