This may well be true, but explain why I'm always looking for another gear when I'm all ready in 5th gear.

This was a huge problem when I rode my Kawasaki V2K. Those shipped to the states were woefully under geared. Even with loud headers, I do not find the need for a taller gear. The truth is that when I'm tapped out in 5th, I down shift to 4th for an extra 5 miles an hour.

AND a modded bike with 250+ HP and 9 K rev limit has no need for a 6th gear But if you want a low end trq stroker highway cruiser the 6th gear sounds great
