It's fairly simple to check the valve clearances, it's swapping the shims that requires more labor -per the service manual the cams have to be removed. And that is how I did it. However, my local dealer claims that they have made a tool will remove and replace the shims with out taking out the cams.
Either way, you could raise the fuel tank, remove the intake tract (if you haven't gone with triple filters) pop the cam cover and use a feeler gauge to see if you are at least in spec.
