10k service

It's fairly simple to check the valve clearances, it's swapping the shims that requires more labor -per the service manual the cams have to be removed. And that is how I did it. However, my local dealer claims that they have made a tool will remove and replace the shims with out taking out the cams.

Either way, you could raise the fuel tank, remove the intake tract (if you haven't gone with triple filters) pop the cam cover and use a feeler gauge to see if you are at least in spec.

Save ur money

I've got 36,700 miles and have never adjusted the valves. A K&N oil filter and Royal Purple 10/30, cost: 50 something bucks, and it runs like a locomotive.

Pig, thanks for the help. Stick, that is what I am thinking is the case for me. I would imagine that I would notice a performance change or some valve noise if I needed to make adjustments. I will inspect them and let you know how it goes. I have used Amsoil and Golden Spectro since the day I got mine. Both are fully synthetic.

I talked to the service manager at Moto400 in Dawsonville, GA today when I picked up my bike, he said the 10,000 mile service on the R3T would be about $500.

My valves were adjusted at 10K. I hope they needed it.

Had my 10K done this week in at Myers in Asheville. Mechanic said that valves were in spec. Service, fuel guage, clock, and tax-$1270.

I got my R3T back a couple weeks ago from the 10K maintenance/service. I had Triumph Detroit do the aforementioned work (including oil & filter change too) and it ran me $550. Apparently I had seven valves that needed adjustment (loose)!

While I wasn't prepared for a bill that much... I will say the R3T is quieter now and runs great.

There is something to be said for those hydraulic lifters on my prior Asian metric Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic.

A good deal of that must be the valves, I just had the 10k done and the valves were all good. Seems I saved a bundle since there was no need to adjust the valve clearance, looks like the bill skyrockets depending how many need the pucks swapped out. I spent $660 total and that included $250 for a Power Commander Dyno tune. I don't feel so bad now, seems like I got off easy. The tune was a good investment, they got an extra 9 horses and 9 foot lbs on top of what I already had by tweeking the mixture. They said you lose 10-15% through the transmission and shaft and it dyno'd out on the best run at 155bhp and 160fpt at the rear tire. The tech made it a point that I'm right on the edge of what the clutch can handle. I guess that's it for performance upgrades until I beef up the clutch. My next major expense is going to be replacing the rear shocks, I rode one with adjustables and am sold on the improvement in handling.

$264 fo valve check and adjustment if needed

I always change my oil so my dealer said the check/adjustment was $264 but it required 4 hours with 3 hour cool down if I rode it down there as he is 2 hours away. I have decided to check them myself as I have heard most don't need adjusting anyway. I have had several Hondas prior to this one and none of those ever needed it.

Having very few dealers is the only complaint I have about owning this one. There are Honda, Harley, and even Boss Hoss dealers closer than my Triumph dealer.
