Side of the road is indeed hazardous.
Back when I was in the Air Force, there was a system of people being reassigned, and folks at the receiving end told to expect them and help out with finding a place to live and so on.
I was once assigned a woman, spoke to her on the phone, and waited. And waited. And when she didn't show up, I put out the alarm. Two weeks later, we found she was in the hospital, in a coma.
They were relocating, and had a pickup pulling a trailer, and the trailer got a flat, an they were pulled over to deal with it.
Three undocumented Hispanics were in another pickup and supposedly the driver fell asleep. The pickup slammed into the trailer while the Air Force officer was bent over the tire -- last thing she remembered.
She was in a coma six months.
