When splitting engine cases for access to gearbox if there is a gasket between the jointing surfaces or is it only a sealant that is used?

The stuff triumph used on my cases is tan and hard as a rock, anyone know what that stuff is?

Just my opinion
I would think that hard would be bad because when aluminum heats and cools it will expand and contract i think u need something that will give and will not break the sealing surface.
I will be watching yours for longjevity

Manual calls for Threebond, I purchased from Amazon, Threebond 1207B, description is: silicone type liquid gasket

The fwd trans have cases that bolt together i might give it a try also on 4x4 transfer cases.

Ive used ,3bond, then honda bond, last time was permatex black. If it the gasket area like the rear of the engine and torsional cover I use hylamar just incase I need to save the gasket. But would also use the same black permatex.
Sometimes i use a combo like the 3m yellow on the water pump then gasket then black rtv so when u pull the pump u do not have to spend 30 minutes cleanjng the block area.
