Yeah, sounds like something I might have tried trying to figure out what's going on, but as @Protonhound said- obviously not a good idea.With no load on the wheel things are just slapping around in the engine, I personally wouldn't even try it.
How many miles are on the bike? You said you might be hearing it from the drive shaft. Have you inspected and lubed the splines? I don't think most people do, but it's a necessary part of maintenance on every bike with a final drive, including the mighty Rockets. I predict over time we're going to hear about FDs going out on the 2.5s. I went through two on my '11 Roadster and that was with routine maintenance.
