TuneECU .... free tuning software

The GiPro guys aren't sure on the Roadster. They've offered me 50% off if I want to try it, test it, document it. I'm tempted, but also worried about hurting the bike. Thoughts?

$75 is better than $150 but since you have know idea what the ignition maps in your Roadster look like, you don't know what using a map for a higher gear is going to do, if anything.

We do have some info. The following thread was posted after the Tuneboy guys got hold of the Roadster and read some data from the bike:
http://www.r3owners.net/rocket-iii-roadster/7304-some-numbers-roadster.html

The GiPro guys suggested setting for gear 5, given that info and are even letting me return the unit if it doesn't work. So .. it's on it's way from Europe .. est. 8 days.
I also just pulled my secondary butterflies and 12-minute tuned her. Running very well. I've not hit it really hard, as I'm still finishing her first 500 break-in miles and I'm trying to be a good boy and mind the manual.

The numbers in that post refer to the position of the secondary throttle plates, not ignition advance. Those numbers show that even in 5th, the secondaries are open 100% to 4600 rpm then close down to 35%. So even if the GiPro worked, you'd still be running with secondaries partially closed above 4600 rpm.

Ignition is much more complicated. The ignition tables on some tunes don't vary as a function of what gear you're in. In this case, the GiPro wouldn't do anything. The ignition advance varies all over the place as a function of TP and rpm. Just assuming that advancing the timing in one region of an ignition table is going to turn your bike into a rail doesn't make much sense.

Cable arrived, it will take me a few days before I have the time to get into it though. I will makes notes along the way and put together a how-to as I'm going.

Anyone have a tune for an '06 standard with Jardines, full power in the lower gears?

Here is the 20222 tune with secondaries open 100% but with the PCIII trim map for Jardines (M510-004) loaded into the fuel trim table. If this works like Tuneboy, then the trims will be applied to the fuel tables when you download the tune into the ECU.

The .hex file wouldn't upload so I gave it a .dat extension. You need to rename it back to .hex to work in TuneECU.

how do you rename an extension .dat into .ex

I have requested that the webmaster include .hex files in the list of files that can be attached to posts. It should be functional in the near future.

After working with TuneECU a bit on the dyno, it is good for the price. (FREE)
But has a few shortcomings as a decent tuning solution. Altering the L tables is very cumbersome, as there is no way to input a number directly, or increase the cells as a percentage - as with TuneEdit.

There are a few other glitches when you turn off the power to the engine - the software doesn't like this.

But for 99% of users, it is good at diagnostics, swapping maps, and minor map changes.

I really like the ability to load the existing map from the ECU.

But using it to tune on the dyno - especially low rpm and loads - takes considerably more time than TuneEdit. As a result, I can't see many paying for the extra time required to fully tune the bike with it.

I still give Alain a thumbs up for making it available, and supporting it as he does.

Wayne, Thanks for taking on the pioneering role with the new software. Being an old (very old actually) programmer, it wouldn't surprise me if the author doesn't take note of your findings and make changes in subsequent releases to address the shortcomings. Its not unusual for a new product to be tossed out there with just that intent in mind.
