Tranny problems in the older bikes.

Nervous now......

I have just purchased a 2005 standard with only 5,400 miles on it, but I notice sometimes it has trouble finding nuetral or shifting down from 2nd gear? All the feedback in here makes me think about selling it and buying something else! That in addition to what I have experienced ordering and receiving parts? I think 5 weeks it too long to wait for a simple part. And it seems that others have had a lot of problems with waiting for parts/service? Any thoughts? I love my bike but would hate to have a tranny problem that will cost thousands of dollars to fix. I almost bought a VTX1800 and now wonder if that wouldn't have been the right choice? Anyone work with the Triumph dealer in Denver? How are they?
 


..don't be ready to give up so easily..maybe the clutch needs adjusting?..I've got a VTX rusting away in the garage..the Rocket gets all the seat time..and the standards or classics are better than the touring or roadster models imo..

I do love the power and the riding position and let's face it, biggest dog on the block and I love that! I also love the way it always draws a crowd no matter where I park it! Anyone know what percentage of the earlier bikes have the tranny problems?
 
Sounds like you need to update the clutch lifter bearing and pressure plate.

Is that the fix for the problem, or do some of the actual gears in the tranny need to be replace as well? As in this "update" kit I keep reading about that Triumph may or may not acknowledge that they have?

Some did some didn't, the early rockets had flat lifter bearings that had problems. I modified mine before the upgrade was available and have not had problems since. The symptoms you describe are similar to what my bike had. Does the bike clunk when slow coasting with the clutch pulled? if so that is also a sign, hopefully it is only a clutch problem. It can be caused by incorrect adjustment at the lever, there should be 3mm play at the lever. The lifter shaft may need replacing as well due to wear from bad adjustment.
 

Goth, this site and some good attorneys should be all the pole you need for a Good class ation law suit. They Don't get paid untill you get paid.
But what you read here is only a small percentage of owners with problems.
 
I bought Shamu ('08 R3T) about two months ago and have been riding her every day since and enjoying every mile. She now has 14,500 miles. I have to admit that this thread is disturbing. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that I do not start to experience these tranny issues because I do not want the aggravation or expense.
