ALL the new twin cam engines would destroy themselves before 10,000 miles
I have had just the opposite reaction. Like I have mentioned before a good friend of mine kept up talking bad about the Rocket. One afternoon I just threw the keys at him and said take it for a spin. One week later he traded his Harley for a Rocket. There is a guy at work who used to own a Harley and is now looking very hard for a Rocket. Both of these people could very easily be classified as die hard Harley types. The main reason why A lot of Harley types are looking around is because of the Twin cam engine. The motor is unreliable and so is the primary. If you ride over 10,000 miles a year it is very expensive bike to keep running. stators and motor compensaters get expensive when you are replacing them every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Most of the people I know including myself do are on work. The two dealers in Tulsa are a joke. Even if the dealerships had real mechanics the cost of labor on replacing a stator is well over $1,500 dollars. The one common item among Harley riders is most of them do not ride very much at all. The ones who do ride their bikes are getting fed up with the cheap and unreliable parts used in the newer stock Harley's. The screaming eagle motor compensater I bought for my Harley lasted 15,000 miles and is going south. Now I found out that Baker (company based in the U.S.A.) has redesigned and improved the Motor compensater and is asking $499.00 . The screaming chicken compensator is made in CHINA and sells for a lot less. Harley may be great at creating image and promoting sells but The older crowd which bought the bike and really ride that includes myself are fed up with their product.
WHEN they came out with the new TWIN CAM engines those things would blowup between 5000 and 10.000 miles in fact HARLEY is recalling 200,000 of those things claiming all of those engines are faulty Like I said I have a friend that owns a HARLEY dealer so I get to see all the problems and believe me there are alot so when I here those fairy tales about amazing reliability I have to laugh

For what it is worth; back in February I was in Vegas for business and 9 of us stayed out an extra day to rent bikes and ride out to the Hoover Dam, Red Rocks and the Valley of fire. 7 guys rented 2015 H-D bikes and 2 guys rented 2015 Indians. I had an Indian. 3 out of the 7 H-D bikes broke down and we had to leave them where they broke down for the dealer to pick up. That is 42% of the H-D bikes rented broke down in a ride that was under 300 miles. That is a high percentage of break downs out of new the motor company's new "Rushmore" line. At least the H-D mechanics are staying busy.

Wow...I realize that this is a Triumph forum but talk about some repressed HD fealings...sheesh. I've have had a somewhat different experience with HD. Coming off the rice burners of various stripe in my younger days I bought my first Triumph in 2012 and really liked it. The wife however hated it as the back seat was less than comfortable and there were no amenities on longer trips. So nothing doing but I had to buy one like my buddy had that she had ridden with and ended up with her picking out an anniversary edition 2013 Ultra Classic Limited...WAY more expensive than I had planned on. Now 3 years on she rides her own and I am stuck with a bike I never really wanted in the first place. However, I will say this, provided you can do your own maintenance, change your own tires, and don't mind being seen on a geezerglide, it's really not that bad of a bike. It now has 35,000 miles on it with no major malfunctions and does a decent job as a commuter and a better than average open road bike. It has never broken down on the side of the road o left me stranded anywhere. Yes they are more expensive than they should be, yes there are a certain element of the HD crowd that are @ssholes, yes their parts are outrageous, and yes their performance is not what it should be, but that's not the bike's fault. Taken for their intended purpose they perform just fine. My @ss ain't 20 years old anymore which means I don't need to race everything on two wheels every time I leave the house and I appreciate a little comfort on a long ride. I loved my first Rocket so much that I was determined to turn one into a world class long range cruiser, and I came close, but it took a while. My '09 standard has just about every creature comfort that can be added and I still haven't made it into what I would call a real open road machine that would compete (in market share) with any of the big baggers (wings, HD, Indian, Victory, etc). I will fiddle with bar height and a couple other things this year to try and get it "just right", but I will still be replacing back tires every 5-7k miles or so. I realize I could have started with an R3T, but I prefer the standard / classic style so I will stick with it and see what comes out the other side.

I took this

And made it into this

And rode it for 20 years, including numerous long trips. I won't say it never broke, but it always managed to drag itself home without the need for a truck or trailer.

I have only been broke down once on the side of the road but then again I have spent a small fortune keeping the bike running and fixing problems to avoid that from happening. Do I like the bike? Yes, By the way r3tex glad to hear you have been lucky with your ultra almost time to check the cam tensioners. Even the hydraulic system needs to be looked at around 35,000 to 40,000 miles. Which bike do I prefer to ride? The Rocket X of course. By far a better running bike. Would I buy A Harley again? Hell no.
