Tires: Metzler vs. Avon vs. Bridgestone

You rode 500 miles on a bald tyre and now are complaining the cords are showing. *** me dead, what did you expect? Anyone can get good or crap mileage out of anything; it just depends on how they ride and the road surface- some roads are harder on tyres than others. Looks like yours wore out pretty evenly. Don't know what your complaining about. Maybe riding a big bike is too expensive for you.
The regular exedra I had on my rear went from "it's getting close,I should start looking for a deal on a tire" to what he showed in his picture in a shockingly short amount of time. I was astonished how fast it went to tread, and I was riding very conservative because I knew I was close. The regular exedra is not a good tire for the beast.

Based on the pix, I would say you were running underinflated.
Seems to me the cord should wear through in the center first.
You can't run cornering more than on the straight - at least not on the highways.
I would never take off on a trip with 4500 miles on the rear tire as I usually only get 4K to 5K on a rear.
The Excedra Max gave me 8K and I was ***'n ELATED!!!

The Exedra Max radial was always the recommended tire from the get go (by IMFASTTOO) and I was the first to try it. Some others here and on the other site confused it with the bias ply Exedra series, which have received universally bad feedback as a rear tire.

I didn't get nearly the life out of my Avon/Max combo that others have reported. It was better than the Metz though and since the handling and ride were 1000 times better I will be going back to the same combo.
I certainly don't believe just mileage is the best way to compare tires. 85% of my riding is hard through twisties (love the German back roads!) and what little highway time I do is usually on Eastern European roads that aren't in great condition. All things considered I'll take my 6k miles (still more than I ever got out of a Metz on the rocket), confidence in the corners and wet surfaces, and roll the throttle back happily on a new combination of the same.

Hello Phantomjock and welcome from Virginia. I have the Excedra Max tires on my R3T right now and have had them on it for the last 12k miles. They will need to be replaced soon I expect since I am starting to see the cupping on the front tire. However, they are still holding up quite well on the wet cold roads of this last week. Good luck with your new tire...

I am running the Avon Cobra front in the 140 flavor and the Exedra Max rear on my 06' Classic. I have close to 7k on the rear and 1000+ paired with the Avon. Holy S!#t what a difference it made in the handling. I ride twisties in the Sierra Nevada mountains almost every weekend and I cannot say enough how much I like this combo. The front Metz was horrible would push and generally made the bike feel heavy and not want to corner without firm pressure on the bar. Now you just think about dragin the pegs and rolling throttle in the twisties and it does it eagerly!

I just replaced my Metzler front and rear with new one's as I did 17000 k on them .Good wear and grip wet or dry

I've done 125,000 klms on ME880's .. but when these scrub out i'll be going Avon/Bridgy combo.

TC, you Aussies must have improved the quality of you roads a hundred fold since I was last there 15 years ago. I'm overly impressed with how far my tires have gone on these lousy American highways. This pirate would love to get 77K miles out of a set of MC tires...

I think TC failed to specify that his mileage was accumulated on over a dozen sets of Metzelers, unless his tires have as many or more lives than a tomcat!!!:p
