After sweating it out on a few rides recently with the wife insisting I wear my leather jacket (in 100F+ temps), I went looking for some kind of cooling vest. I really didn't want one of the regular wet evaporation vests, and I cam across this site in Houston:
I ordered one of the neck coolers as a test and it came in today. Seems to work pretty good around the house, and I'm going to go do some yardwark and see how that goes. No chance yet to ride with it, but it is only about 80F our today, so I guess I wouldn't get the full effect at the moment.
Has anyone tried one of their vests while riding in the heat and humidity? Wanted to see if anyone has any info before I become the group guinea pig on this one
So I tried the neck cooler wrap working in the yard and I got about 1 1/2 to 2 hours of cooling out of a fully charged pack. Kinda nice since it wasn't too cold but just constantly cool.
I had thought about the 2-ish hour time frame, and at least for me that's about a good time for a smoke, drink and pee break, and if I keep a small cooler on the rack I should just be able to swap the packs and go.
Here it's as warm - A good ventilated leather Jacket should be fine - i.e. Vanson ProPerf leather.
Double leather across the shoulders is a HUGE advantage in strong sun. I ride a lot at the moment in 40ºC temps - strong sun - with a Vanson Cobra Jacket and ProPerf jeans.
Short runs I use a Halvarssons CE protection Jacket (LEO spec) - the sun is too strong across the back for long runs. This I'm working on.
The vest says 2.5 hours and can be recharged in ice in 20 minutes... or you could pack an extra set of the cooling pack and have it in a small bag with ice and swap it out...

Have you considered another type of jacket? I bought a summer jacket with a mesh fabric on the outside and a removeable inner liner for the hot days.
With the inner liner removed ,the air can blast through on the on the inside of the forearms and underarms and the ribcage ,but the mesh is still there to provide anti abrasive protection
It also has good protection around the shoulder and spine
Western Australia has temps very similar to Texas and sometimes I just get so hot I just drip with sweat inside my old leather jacket.
