Stripe Delete/Removal

So I got off my ass and washed her for the first time this month :0. Took some pictures, because, I don't plan on having white stripes next time she's this clean lol, consider these Before:

Place Holder post, I'm curious and can't wait till next week, pics to come, going to start today.

So, I don't have any goof off, or adhesive remover, will get some tomorrow. Here are some pics, total time for rear fender 1hr 10minutes:

I've never worked with vinyl before, but did watch some videos. The "open time" after heating the are you want to remove is about 1 minute. Working in 30c ambient temps, about 1 minute circling a fist sized area from 2 inches with the blow dryer. Remove heat, use card to get it started and when you have a bit loose enough, use fingers to peel it back. Target about 1 inch at a time before reapplying heat, then repeat process a lot. I found the the outside edge wanted to stay on, so used one hand to peel and other hand with card to keep pace on the stubborn edge. No need to remove tail light. You can just scrape right up under the rubber light grommet.

When restriping, obviously the light needs to come off, but that area is hidden so it wont matter.

My "High tech heat gun" set to High heat and High fan speed.

My scraper of choice, very expensive and hard to find. Credit cards work great, soft, and don't scratch the paint. They WILL be destroyed in the process, for my rear fender I destroyed 3. They delaminate from the heat and pressure.

How my stripes look now

There is residue, but my bike was a late '13 manufacture date, they have been on there for 2.5 years already.

My ass end now, gumoff tomorrow and she'll be nice, clean, and ready for new stripes of a color more appropriate to my black on black on black bike.

You probably already know this but after removing the stripes you might have a slight color differentiation because of sun fade on the matte black. If you're going to stripe over then there won't be a problem.

The red striped bikes are clear coated over and the matte black bike stripes aren't I think.

That is the best looking aftermarket fender I've seen on a Roadster. Where you get it if you don't mind me asking? :D

Carbon dry my friend, thanks.

Pricey, but it's not fiberglass backed carbon, it's straight carbon made with what I'm 90% sure is prepreg using epoxy and either trapped silicone or an autoclave. Also comes with clear coat already sprayed, so, after you pay to have cheaper parts cleared to avoid yellowing price will be similar.

I'm pretty confident the color fade will be next to nothing in my case.

Grabbed some Goof Off today and did a test spot.....

BAD NEWS!!

Triumph, in all their wisdom, spray the matte clear coat OVER the white stripes, once you get the residue off you can see/feel where the lines were.

Doesn't bother me since I'm redoing stripes, but for you @MikeDeY if you remove them, it will be visible unless you sand and respray matte.

Wow. THAT'S WHY THEY WERE SO HARD TO REMOVE  & That's the opposite of what makes sense. The advantage of vinyl striping tape is so that you can make changes when you want/need to. If graphics or stripes are painted on, then yea, go ahead & clear over them. Oh well. this makes you the guinea pig!

Here is one stripe area fully cleaned and washed so you can see what's left, you'll definitely want to restripe!!

My painter said the same, so I had the matte re-painted (Tuxedo Black) with the stripes (base yellow) embedded in the clear coat.
All came out smooth and even . . .

Masking and painting the stripes over the matte prior to clear coating adds a couple steps and more time. Putting manufactured stripes on the matte and then clear coating likely saves Triumph money. Just sayin' . . .
