I fully credity the damper as to how I stayed upright in a violent slapper around 130mph in Lakey, TX a few years back. Original cause still uncertain to this day, possibly the giant fing agragate they use on the roads there with forks at full extension hard on 3rd gear uphill.
It was bad enough rider chasing could see the bike get all crazy under me from probably about 100ft back.
This on a bike I commuted daily on, cracked 120 every single trip, often over 160, and it never did it so bad. Dampers are insurance for that freak event, and when you need them you NEED them, the rest of the time imho it's a mental comfort crutch that lets you know if that case arrives it will save you (I admit I have them on my birkes for the second reason).
Even with a damper, a strong bike will wobble a bit at times, both mine give a quick little head shake when hitting a lane divider leant over high throttle high speed. It won't stop that.
