Starter Upgrades for the Aussies

Been thinking about Petes post about fitting a thicker battery/starter cable .. 3 times faster cranking.
 
I spoke to Mittzy and he said it was ok to put this on this thread........maybe shipping could be quite expensive due to the weight so here is another local option maybe.

I gave the starter numbers to my local friendly Auto Electrician, he got back to me with some interesting info.
In Australia the starter is off a Toyota Camry with a 5SFE engine.
Basically the genuine Nippon Denso starters are a very good unit and rare to have problems.
Alot of the after market starters are Chinese made and they have seen issues with them.

His thoughts are if you want a replacement starter you could to go to a wreckers and get a genuine Nippon Denso starter off a Toyota Camry with a 5SFE motor, for about $20 to $40, get sparky to go through it & rebuild it, put your end housing on and it should owe about $120 to $150 all up with a guarantee.
or a Brand new genuine Nippon Denso starter is about $250 plus gst

Anyway just abit of food for thought

yeah i'll start hunting around the wrecking yards and see what i can find, i'm still going to do the pos lead and see if it makes much difference.
 
I might have this wrong so shoot me down if you must but Ozrider said that the Camry starter is the same as the standard Rocket starter so if you go down this track you are not getting a higher output starter. Just a cheaper way to get a replacement for the original. That being said I'm happy with my original starter at the moment.
 

Yes Bruce you are right BUT I am sure it is the 1.4kw innards from the camry starter that upgrades the cranking. Thats my understanding.
 
Discussed starter motors with Stu , the Workshop manager at Team Moto Springwood today. Said he can't remember a Rocket S/Motor giving anyone any trouble. He's pretty sure that Triumph don't sell any parts to refurbish the stock one. Didn't think to ask what Triumph wants for a new one.

i only had the slow cranking problem in temp around 10C or colder it was always a bit slow in cold weather but having 10:1 compression now made it barely able to turn over when cold, i double up on the neg with similar as stock cable to chassis but found threading 7-8 mm cable would not fit through the loops that hold the cable to chassis so i doubled up on pos cable tied to existing cable with thinker heaver duty eye ring with both cable's attached to eye ring one on battery and the other on starter motor
 
Informed the Odyssey battery I got when my Yuasa died is not as good as I was led to believe. Seems as times gone by the quality has slipped and now they are really not much better than the one Triumph fit standard.. so I've been told.
