Hello everyone,

Hope your 4th of July weekend is off to a good start. I am out riding and I just stopped to post this as it is ruining this perfect riding day!

When shifting from 4th to 5th at higher rpms, I've noticed even in 4th @ 3K I cannot shift into 5th consistently without it "falling" out of gear. The shifter is bouncing all over my foot and acts like it is in neutral. It will try to pop into 5th and then my RPMs will shoot to 6K as if I'm in neutral just pinning it and then it will clunk back into 4th.

At every other gear it is as smooth as can be, even at way higher rpms than 3K.

Any ideas?

First thought would be the detent Spring but that normally effects the the lower gears, I hate say this but it might be a loose selector shaft I believe other member have had similar issues and will hopefully pipe in soon for you

Have no idea but make sure the clutch cable is adjusted correctly. Covered under warranty in any case.

Yeah it's a 16, has about 3.5K miles. I've had issues with, mirrors, turn signals and brake light not functioning, engine dying on downshift and now this.....

Thanks for the input guys, I called the dealer and they are open tomorrow at 11. Going to drop it off and have them take a look at it. Maybe i could try taking a look today at the selector shaft, but based on your response im guessing it isnt easy to get to haha.

mine has 600 miles on it & has done it 2 times...both times i was giving it some going from 3rd to 4th. I have tried to do it again but im being more positive with the gear shift & so far so good. I will keep an eye on it & let you know if it happends on a regular basis.
Im taking it out tomorrow & now i know it could be an issue ill give it some & see what happends.

cheers.

I would lean towards the detent spring. If your description of bouncing around is not defining sloppy loose and free like its not in contact with anything. It hard guessing at such a distance but hey its a 16 which means you will not have a problem getting the warranty work approved.

I have done a number of tests today and I can confirm that I have a somewhat similar problem but nowhere near as bad.
shifting from third to forth I can feel a very slight bounce in the lever unless I shift quickly and positively.... It seems to be at its worst in a specific rev range pretty high up.
As long as I am quick and positive with my shift it never misses the gear.

I've had it from 3rd to 4th as well. The 4th to 5th is almost always reproducible. The odd part is I tried clutchless shifting at around 3K RPMs and it seems to slide right in. So possibly a clutch issue? I adjusted clutch and shifter to see if it wasn't setting in right but that didn't seem to help all that much as it is still happening.

I looked into the detent spring around the net and it seems like when this is an issue, people are stuck in a gear and cant go up or down. Although that is just based on my quick searching haha. And yes thank God it is still within warranty !

I have seen one fellow Ian @idk who's got stuck in 5th but also remember ones that will not stay in fourth after you shift unless you hold it in. My friend in town has that problem on his 08 touring. Ian has a good memory and will probably be along shortly. One thing for sure the detent spring can be looked at with a scope but you will have to drain the coolant. Possible the oil unless you put her up on jack stands in the front. to tilt the engine so the oil runs to the back.
