Rockets Across America II - 2007

Passed the Test

The Son-in-law on his Sprint and I on my Rocket left at 9am this morning. We rode every two lane back country road in the Virginia foot hills for a total of 6 hours in the saddle and 241 miles. His bike tells him all kinds of stuff like that, total hours of the trip and average speed. My R/3 tells me my ass hurts. I don't think 300-350 mile days are going to be a problem on Interstate. Just wanted to test the waters. See you all in Smashville.

Baggage 1 I don't have an answer either, other than this is a pretty small and close group that has done this for two years now. The number that show is small, but online friendship is large. Maybe next year expansion show be considered, but the larger the group of cats, the more trouble to herd.

Good idea or not?

I don't know if this is a good suggestion or not, but I did it anyway. Ed advised me to find out where all the dealers were on our general route from here to Kitty Hawk and then to Nashville. Seems as though Harley Davidson provides it's owners with a book of all the dealers, their locations and phone numbers and Ed suggested I obtain the same. Well, I did, sort of. I went to the Triumph Website, dealer section and in Triumph's infinite wisdom, the dealers are listed alphabetically but not geographically. They are listed by City, not State, isn't that brilliant? I muddled through it and printed the directions to each one so if something breaks or fails in route, I at least have the location of the nearest dealer. I may just swing by a number of them and buy a Tee shirt with their logo on it. That's what Hardley folks do.

Might not be something I need but then again it may be a lifesaver.

If anyone needs dealers and locations, speak up and I'll put them in a post so you can print them.

Trip getting closer

Well one other trip down, sorry I haven't posted much lately but I just got in last night, was glad to be home. I've got one more to the MacClenny (?) area of Florida (outside of Jacksonville) later on this week or early next week, may take the Wing on that one to give it some exercise, it is feeling a little neglected lately. But if the wife comes along I will probably end up going in the Focus again. It will be the Rocket's turn on the 6th when Bob and I go to Nashville. Sometimes having so many choices for travel can be frustrating but I am not complaining, it is great, on the other hand, to have the choices to make. I wish I could ride both the Wing and the Rocket to Nashville...sigh. Well the Wing will get another workout to the Honda Homecoming in July or August.

The only bad thing is I've been treating a lower molar with antibiotics since last Wednesday in North Carolina and it gets to be extracted Tuesday at 3:50 pm. I am hoping to be pretty well healed up by next week so that I can enjoy my visit to Hooters that weekend (I am currently salivating over the thought of a Philly Cheese Steak...Hooter style). Still trying to get the correct ball to mount my car GPS to the handlebars...the ball I ordered was too big so I've got to talk to someone to get the correct size for it.

Hope this tooth pulling goes well, I need to make this trip. I want to see how the beast does on the highways. I plan on going to the RAT meeting on Saturday morning as the schedule currently stands, but I may be making a few side trips while I am in Nashville to see how my "custom" guitar factory is coming along.

Great to be back.

Dennis,

Hope the extraction goes ok. I just went through the root canal thing on a rear tooth. About half way through, I wished they had just pulled it. Now I get to put out about a thousand bucks for the crown. Looking forward to the meeting everyone in Smashville, and I think you will be pleased the R/3 on the open road. See you there.....

I don't know if this list would be any easier or not. Still not geographical.

It's better, but not quite there. A lot of those are not Triumph autrhorized dealers and one in particular isn't a bike dealer at all. British Only in Garden City, Michigan is a parts retailer for vintage Brit parts. They don't even work on bikes. I was interested in dealers who are familiar with our bikes, especially the R3, just in case of trouble on the road.

A few years back I was in the north country of Ontario Provence snowmobiling and my 1000 Arctic Cat took a dump on me. It was 30 grueling miles to the nearest dealer who coul;d work on it and then it turned out he was closed for a week. I wound up renting a sled and bringing the dead sled back home. At least you always trailer snowmobiles. I dread mechanical problems away from home and the resultant grief. At leas the knowledge of factory authorized dealers on or near my route is a little comfort.

It's nice of HD to provide it's owners with a dealer book. I guess they know potato bikes aren't all that reliable. I, for one, don't want to find out the R3 is in the same league in the reliability department. Just want to play it safe rather than sorry.

If we have any dental problems in Nashville, I'll be more than happy to intervene. My SOG Tactical knife has a pair of pliers and a pry bar in case I need to lever the offending tooth out. I'll bhe sure to pack a 5 pound drilling hammer for a knock out pain killer too.

Bad news on my end guys. Repairs to my bike and two round trips to Oklahoma City has drained my trip funds. They replaced a TPS sensor and the middle coil to a tune of about $450.00 including diagnostics and labor. Include about 80 gallons on diesel for two round trips, and i'm busted ! They did however throw in a new remapping that was to be done on any R3 that came in for service or repair. I wish they hadn't done that. It makes the bike feel sluggish off the line although it eliminated alot of the decel popping. Anyways, sorry guys...all i can do is hope to make the next gathering. Bigern

Big Ern:

Sorry to hear that. I was looking forward to meeting and talking to someone who had taken the beast apart and survived to tell about it.

If I wasn't retired, and on a fixed income, well, almsot fixed, I could go in the loan business especially around here. Everybody is a little down on their luck.

Hopefully, we'll see you next year at some other place.
