Turn signals

Ted , it sounds like you have a short somewhere.
I had problems with my turn signal ( left side) not working, Then would work for a while. It took me a bit of time to find the problem.
It was a short in the signal wiring that runs under the back fender. The insulation on the left turn signal wire had gone a little bare and was touch a metal bracket under the fender.
Might want to check that.

There is no flasher. I just had mine in for the same issue, and they couldn't find a thing. It has been a while since I dabbled in electrics (auto/boat/plane), but from what I can remember from my training and experience, on page 623 of the service manual I have saved from here: Download Service_Manual_R3S_C_T.pdf from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way (thanks hanso) the only thing in the circuit that controls the ground for them to work is flashing LEDs. I will try to do some research, and make sure I am right, but it may take a while, I am going back about 30 years and it is kind of fuzzy.

And then again, I could be completely wrong.

Does anyone know where the turn signal flasher unit is located on the R3T? According to the service manual it is under the right side cover. But, what they show as the flasher unit is the relay for the Auxiliary Lights.

I have a long running problem with my turn signals only working part time. When they stop working if I repeatedly switch them off and on they will start working again and go for quite awhile before stopping again. I've opened the switch housing and cleaned the contacts but no real change. I figured the flasher unit would be the easiest and cheapest place to start, if only I could find the **** thing.
gpmaz are you still having trouble with your R3T turn signals . I have noticed every now and again that mine do not work . when it does it I try to turn the other side on and it does not work ether if I cancel it wait a minute it will work. it doesn't do it all that often but I may not catch that it is not working every time. 2toneblue 09 R3T

Yeah, the **** thing acts up randomly. I've taken the switch apart and cleaned it with contact cleaner several times. Seems to work better for awhile, or maybe the cleaning has no effect and its just possessed.

i do not have a touring. when it is working turn it on and see if you can hear it clicking and try to find it this way if it has a relay you should hear it.
some times a relay will have a thermal switch so if you had a short at say the rear it would open the circuit and not do anything.
checking at the switch you could check for 12 volts.
in the manual it has 12 volts coming into the switch an connects it to either the right or the left turn.
on my 07 classic when i turn the signals on i can clearly hear the flasher clicking under the right cover.
i don't know if this will help.
it would be nice to know how the voltage works through that switch

For whatever reason the Touring is different. There is no flasher unit. I have removed every relay looking module on the bike and none of them are a flasher, despite what the shop manual shows. I believe someone said its actually part of the ECU, which also is different on the Touring model. Whether or not that's true I don't know, but I do know, there is no flasher unit.
