Question about suspension. Bottoming.

I'm trying to get everything ready to leave Tuesday and am finding that when I and MB are both on the R3R, the shocks bottom out when we go over the least bit of a bump. I never had a suspension problem and know very little about them (shocks). I've been looking for a spanner wrench to adjust the shocks but it did not come with the bike. Will adjusting them to make them stiffer help? It seems it is a travel issue more than a spring setting. The shocks are set on "3". Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Never had a suspension issue before.

Oh yeah, just thought.... I have an extra set of stock shocks off the R3 Standard. Thinking about changing to them?

IIRC the adjuster is a straight bar which fits in the hole at the bottom of the shock. try setting on the stiffest

the roadster comes with the comfort shocks fitted as standard, double check the settings, for fully loaded they should be set at 1 or 2, for single riding i use 3-4, just get an alan key in the hole and turn it round, its really easy to do and should make the world of difference, the mark for the setting is on the securing nut at the base of the shock just make sure the setting you need is lined up with this.

Before I left out for RAAVIII, I checked more colosely and found where my trailer hitch brace was striping the brake master cylinder. I installed a couple of spacers on the hitch and it clears allowing for mor travel. All is well. Thanks for the help.

Depends on which way you count the bumps.....

Just increase the preload to MAX and ride it. If the shocks still bottom then you need new shocks.

For the original Rocket shocks, 5 is the highest preload = most compression of the spring. You can measure the difference in the length of the shock at 5 (shortest) versus 1 (longest).

Pretty sure the Roadster I demo rode when they first came out didn't have the Comfort shocks .. think that later models had them fitted as standard. So I thought .. know you're none too happy with your shocks Bruce .. maybe worth looking into mate.

Don't know if they were the actual comfort shocks or not but Triumph made a big deal out of saying the suspension had been made softer on the Roadster. Maybe they made them even softer after the first year or so. I've been pretty happy with my stock ones on my '09 but have wished for something better more than once I can tell you. I'm going to give a set of Roadster shocks a go shortly along with Progressive springs in the front and will happily report on how they feel. It sure would nice if they are the 'comfort' ones.
