Total cost $1568.00 not including my time, of which there was about 30 hours. I imagine an experienced header builder could do it in half that time, but I was being careful not to make bad cuts and waste expensive 304 stainless material. All of the welding was done by Doug, who used to weld rockets for NASA. His impressive weld seams of critical butt joints are completely flush with the tubing surfaces.
I really enjoyed doing the layout and cutting/grinding the tubing. I learned a lot about what it takes to get really equal length tubes. My thanks go to Burns Stainless and Doug, for their identical tubing specs for my engine. Great computer programs think alike!
I extended my rear Wilbers shocks by 4 complete turns on the spring length adjusting nuts. This has eliminated my slight scrap at extreme right lean angles by increasing ground clearance. It also has made my steering much more sensitive... so much so that I can flick from low one side to low on the other side, quickly and with little effort. It's really quite amazing for a bike with the R3's mass. I encourage others with Wilbers, Pirellis, and BST rims to try this.
Additionally, the high speed damping is actually improved with this greater pre-load on the springs. The low speed damping is a bit stiffer, but not much. All in all, a definite improvement.
