Interesting points, Ken, but none that are important to me.

I ALWAYS wear ear plugs because I value my hearing. contrary to popular belief, loud exhausts are not the cause of hearing loss for motorcyclists - the culprit is wind noise! Whether you wear a helmet or not the sound of apparent wind (not climatic wind) whipping past our ear holes will damage your ears and hence your hearing acuity over time, usually beginning with a condition called tinnitus.
 
I'm 73 and been riding since 1956. I don't hear as good as I did when I was thirty but I been just chalking it up to old age. I didn't start wearing a helmet on the street until about 91 or whenever the helmet law came to California. I wear ear plugs on long trips but not just around town. I the exhaust sounds more comfortable to me at 60 than it does at 80 so rpms do have a bearing on that.

No thats what they say they get 30mpg I get 40+ the last time I did the fuel check running on the highway I got 44mpg on the modded bike ask PHIL hes been with me and we are always surprised at how good the mileage is

I'm not surprised about that at all Art, with the more powerful Engine one does not need to use so much throttle to achieve the same results when riding normally.
As for when you give it full throttle and get some serious power happening, who cares about fuel economy
 
YEP I dont care about mileage I ride the way I want to have fun gas is cheap so its not important unless your in bum f--k and there arent any stations
 

I have a significant hearing loss in my right ear and moderate loss in my left ear, from my Service as an Artillery Gunner ,mainly as a Driver but also as a Gun number on 105 mm howitzers , also a few occasions where the Bombardier shouted directly into my lug holes didn't help so a bit of wind noise was too late to do anymore damage, if I wear ear plugs I cannot hear a thing,
my opinion is from personal observation from riding a couple of stock big Suzuki's that I have owned in the past A GS1000S and a GSX1400 both bought new with almost silent stock exhausts that were relaxing to ride at high speed both of these were (in my tinkering stage)fitted with pod air filters and 4into one exhausts and resulted in more performance but a less pleasant ride on long distance ,in fact at around 140Ks (100Ks under top speed) in top gear the 1400 sounded like it needed another gear where stock it was almost silent to the rider giving a more relaxed ride
 
YEP you know the modded bike is smoother than the stock bike and feels like its loafing on the Highway the wind blast over 70 mph is the annoying thing as Im running the Sports screen and I dont like the big windscreen for hide speed riding but the sports screen works well over 130 but you have to tuckin behind it and stay down when your running flat out in the higher gears at who knows how f--kin fast the big beast is traveling .

Bum F--K is that out past the black stump ,on the Goanna Farms, on a track seldom crossed except by folks who are lost think I have been there a few times

Double edged sword there.
If you've got a long drive or ride to get somewhere; 80 mph will shorten your day.
But, I would much rather hit a 65 mph Farm to Market or County Road with some good sweepers.
