New Rocketeer in Japan this Christmas!

Welcome mate from the UK, question as part of the Japanese riding test do they/you still have lift the bike up if it’s laid on its side?

They actually do! Not part of the test but when you do the lessons and test through a riding school like I did they do check that you are capable of it. It was actually something I did on the very first lesson day for the medium class license (up to ~400cc which you need to do before you can take school / test for large). It was an old 200kg CB400SF in my case. They didn't require I do it again during the large bike test schooling though likely as no real need to do it twice (I did medium then Large license schooling and tests back to back over a two month period).

Bike has been delivered!

The Triumph dealer is about an hour and then some away by car but I can't exactly drive there and ride a bike down. They could deliver but wanted 20,000 Yen (or $150ish in usd) but pff that! In the end it took me a bit more than two hours, three trains and one bus to get there which isn't so terrible.

Absolutely gorgeous! Even though having it be delivered on Christmas wasn't really the plan and just ended up being that date I couldn't actually ask for a better Christmas present hah. Even if it was from myself for myself 🤣.

And a welcome surprise to boot! Previously I had gone to look at a different Rocket Storm at a different Triumph dealer in a different prefecture a few months back (was about late September) and that black Storm was also new but the tire on it was the Avon Cobras. I figured the one I would get would also have the Avons but as it turned out it has the new Metzeler Cruisetec's on! That was quite a happy discovery.

The dealer went over the controls with me and how to open the seat, where the ETC reader is (highway toll device for here in Japan), they told me to use only high octane fuel (93+), and some other stuff. Gave me a free t-shirt and then wheeled it out where I geared up hopped on realized I forgot where I put the key and did a double check then I was off! Since this thing is new and I'm not used to it quite yet as well I'm keeping it in rain mode for the time being as well (did the same on my Kawasaki for the break in first ~400km or so).

Some thoughts from the ride:
-Shifts really smoothly. Even though I have the quick shifter on it they suggested to not use for break in (was same on Kawasaki as well).
-Really stable thanks to those massive tires. Coming up slow to a stop felt like I could keep it up longer without needing to put the foot down.
-Quite easy to ride really even being as massive and powerful as it is. Not jerky felt smooth with power delivery.
-Those heated grips get HOT. Even on low setting was quite toasty. Ended up turning them off halfway for a bit.
-Stock muffler is quite nice sounding as it is and love the burble. Though I do think perhaps at some point I would like to try out the Werkes exhaust (black with baffles).
-Brakes are quite nice.
-Exhaust on right doubles as a nice leg warmer in the winter hah.

Quirks and things I need to get used to:
-Kawasaki has maybe given me a bad habit with their positive neutral finder which prevents you from going to neutral while bike is in motion. I ended up in neutral a few times before realizing what was happening.
-Bit taller than the Kawasaki as well so had a half second shock when I put my foot down at a stop and it didn't touch the ground like where it does when I ride the ZX4RR.
-Speaking of putting my foot down and something I am worried about is there is something my pant leg sometimes catches on when I put my leg down. Had it happen a few times on the ride down. Worried this may cause me to drop it at some point maybe need to just tuck my pants into my boots when I ride this one.
-With no fairings or wind shield definitely feel that wind at higher speeds but I can live with that.

Being the break in period I wanted to avoid the high speed toll way for the ride back so only took local roads. One of my favorite ramen 🍜 shops is right at the halfway point and being it was just about 12pm it was time for a lunch break anyway!

From the ramen shop to home was the easiest part of the ride as that is along what they call a 'bypass' road which is their version of a non-toll highway (still stop signals along the road but generally can drive tiny bit faster (~80kmph or so). Was the first time I could get it up to 4th gear.

After 60 some odd km I was finally safe and home! Still have to work rest of this week so won't be able to ride it again until the weekend which I am looking forward to!

Absolutely gorgeous! :inlove
If that's all you eat at a meal you must be a real skinny guy? 😝

American living in Japan here, and I’m excited to introduce my new ride: a Rocket 3 R Storm (Sapphire Black), which is set to be delivered on Christmas Day! 🎄🏍️ (Not a holiday here, so it’s business as usual, but what a gift to myself!) The timing wasn’t deliberate—it just worked out this way due to registration and waiting for an option part to arrive from overseas.

This will be my third bike. I also have a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4RR (a compact but wild 400cc inline-four) and an old ‘87 BMW K100, which is a long-term project. So, why a Rocket? I probably don’t need to explain that here of all places! Of all the bikes in production right now, this one’s at the top of my list for its looks, style, performance, and the seating position on the R version (not a fan of forward controls). That massive three-cylinder engine with those striking pipes hanging off the side is truly a work of art. Plus, with the new Storm version, I could finally get the blacked-out scheme I’ve always wanted, along with upgraded power, torque, and lighter wheels.

For me, it was now or never. With the Yen getting weaker, I suspect future releases will only get more expensive here. Comparing the cost here to other markets made the decision even easier. In Japan, the Storm R is ¥2,989,000 (about $19k USD or £15k GBP at today’s rates). By comparison, it’s $25K USD (¥3,914,630) in the U.S. and £23K GBP (¥4,569,990) in the UK. It feels like a steal!

The final push came from Triumph Japan’s current 50% off all official accessories campaign. I couldn’t resist and loaded up on more than I probably should have. The quickshifter was a must-have (love it on my ZX-4RR), and at half price, it was a no-brainer. Normally priced ¥114,351, I got it for ¥57,176 ($364 USD / £290 GBP). I also added heated grips, the sports seat infill, scrolling indicators (front and back), a trickle charger with the connector, and knee pads. I debated the optional mirrors but decided to skip them since the stock ones seem fine. I passed on the GT seat, forward pegs, and GT handlebars because I prefer the R’s seating position and tank color scheme (black on top). Bags and racks didn’t appeal to me either—though I might regret that someday.

Looking forward to becoming a Rocketeer!
My Christmas/retirement gift to myself as well except Storm GT in "Pacific Blue". Had it delivered a few days before Christmas here in NE Ohio. Dec 28th it was dry and 58F so I took my first cruise of 50 miles. I assumed that Trump's threatened tariffs would push the price up so I found a local dealer that had one in stock. They were willing to deal on it and included a MadStad aftermarket adjustable windscreen. I too got the battery tender, and a nice Triumph armored leather jacket on sale. Santa was good!

Now I can't wait for the spring! Safe travels & enjoy your new ride!

Felt better over the weekend and managed to take it out for a ride up into the mountains a bit. Really enjoy riding this thing and it carries its weight pretty well for being as large as it is.

As you can imagine as there really aren't many of these around on the roads here it seems to get quite a bit of attention. Stopped at a conbini (convenience store) for a quick break and some fried chicken and people were gawking at it in the lot.
