I recently sold my 2000 Valkyrie Interstate. Although I loved the bike and after 40,000 trouble-free miles it was time to let her go and move to something a bit more exiting. I’m looking at a 2006 Rocket III with 10,000 miles. I did a lot of research about Rocket IIIs but would appreciate an objective opinion regarding the 2006 production year. Is there anything that I have to be concerned about like mechanical/electrical issues, or anything else I should be looking for before making a purchase? All of your inputs and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Some people will bring up transmission issues with the 2006 and earlier, however, their are many that have had no issues at all. Mine is a 2004 with 73K miles on it and runs and shifts great. I had it on a dyno a few months ago, and it made the same power as it did 4 years ago. The Rocket isn't for everyone, but mine has been great. I do have to replace clutch plates soon, but after 73K miles, I'm not complaining about that.

The biggest difference is the amount of dealerships, and dealer support. It helps if you have a dealership with a competent service department. Also, parts take a while to get in sometimes when you need them.

A Nike moment?

Welcome Buzz

Like my R3R and had no hassles except wxxkers in tin tops.

Like most things in life, "You pays the money & take your chances".

Hope you get on a bike again soon.

Welcome aboard. Tx pretty much covered it. There were some issues with older models but they were pretty much nailed by the '08 and '09 models. If you're concerned you could look at one of those but I doubt you'll find too much inherently wrong with an '06.

We sold a Valk to get the '08 Beast and although the Valk was great we have not been disappointed. Any of them that have been well maintained should serve well. Also may depend on where you are and what kind of dealer support is in your area.

We trudge on.

Sold a 99 Valk Interstate with 92k on it to buy my new 2010 R3 Touring. Love this bike. It's been trouble free now at 16k and everyone has to stop and look at it. A dealer nearby would be a plus. I drive about 25 miles to mine so not too much of a trip. Hope you get back on the road soon.

Find out oif the upgrade kit was installed, if so, don't worry. If not it doesn't need it. Other than that, ride the snot out of it.

Hey buzz,I also had a valk I /s (99) loved it,however I bought a 09 rocket touring and love even more it's a lot like the valk but IMHO the rocket is faster, there both smooth as silk but hands down the rocket will out Handel it.as far as I know 06's had some trans issues but I think by 06 most of the problems were resolved, anyway go for it you won't be disappointed

I learned the hard way. I presently own an 06 std and had to have the upgrade whe second gear went away. I wouldn't buy another pre-09 Rocket unless it had the upgrade kit. It could cost you an unexpected 3-4K. Then you'd have about the same amount in an 06 as what you pay for a bran new one. Too risky unless you can buy the 06 for really cheap.
