Yamaha Virago 920
Hey folks, came across your forum while researching the R3 & it's been a GREAT source of info, so thanks!!

I've been driving an old Virago 920 for 3 seasons that I basically got for a song, just to see if I'd put enough time & miles on it to justify spending money on a nice bike down the road. Did a cross Canada trip this summer (3000 km's, the old Virago did just fine) that sealed the deal, so now I'm officially hooked, & after a lot of investigating my options I have fallen for the R3's combo of cruiser style & big power! I'm planning to start seriously shopping in the spring, and until then just want to learn as much as I can! Any info & advice for a first time triumph owner is greatly appreciated!! Cheers

Welcome to the forum from Australia, there is a wealth of information on here for you
Cheers Mike, just starting to delve in!

-what's the standard life expectancy on an R3 engine? a) I'm trying to narrow my search field and b) I'd like to drive this bike for a long time
-what are red flags I should watch for?
-my hope is to find a gently used 2012 or newer (any major changes during this timeline?).
-My top price point is going to be approximately 14k. Any advice on buying in Canada vs US? I'm totally open to traveling somewhere & driving the bike home.

Thanks folks!!

Welcome from Florida,Beware of the power of the Rocket!
I can't wait!! Did a full summer on a 2012 Vmax 1700 (belonged to my ex work partner who was out of town for a year) so I'm not unaccustomed to serious power

Welcome fro NJ. Buy in the winter you'll get a better price!! Good luck.

Another Welcome From Auss just one warning ..... you will contract sillygrinites and it is a permanent affliction, after 6 years of ownership I still have it the symptoms are a Silly Grin (similar to just having had sex) every time you come home from a ride

I'm hoping to find a "lasts year's model" early in 2017 that they're wanting to unload for the new ones. There's a few new advertised now in BC for $14999 (CDN $), under 100k on them. Can't drive it home in the winter up here though ha ha!! Thanks

Hello Schneiderman and welcome from Virginia. Generally speaking, any of the 2012 or newer bikes you are looking for should be great.

Virago 750 was my first Yamaha and for some reason made me like them better than the Hondas I had been riding till then. Others tell me how loose the frame was on those bikes but as a youngster back then, I had no clue. A buddy let me ride his 1100 and man was I hooked on the Yamahas.

VMAX has always been my favorite of that brand.
